With fuel prices going through the roof most people don't want to pay one cent more than they have to. One way to find lower gas prices is by checking out GasBuddy.com, where gas prices are posted on-line. Although the system is not fool-proof, it can help find gas for a lower price than the gas station is charging in your immediate area. And best of all the website is free of charge.
How does GasBuddy.com work? You just log onto the site and find the area you are located. You can point and click, type in city names, or enter a zip code. You'll find a long list of gas stations with their address, the recent gas prices (Regular, Premium, and Diesel are all often listed), city the station is located, and the name of the brand (Conoco, Texaco, etc...) It also lists the time and date that the price was spotted.
You can also help the site by spotting and recording gas prices yourself. You'll need to open an account on the site and chose a user name. Then as you are driving around just take note of the gas prices of particular stations and what time you spotted the price. When you have computer access you can enter the data and help-out the public with the updated information.
As an added bonus, on-line users get points for every gas price they enter. The points can be redeemed for the opportunity to enter contest for a gas card (e.g. a 250-dollar debit card for gas). There is a limit to how many points you can get within 24 hours though, to prevent any abuse of the points system. I only have a few thousand points, but some members are over 2,000,000 points!
Like many websites GasBuddy.com has an on-line community with a message board, helpful gas-saving tips, and news stories related to gas prices. There are also charts and graphs showing gas prices in your area compared to a national average. You may be surprised how much gas prices can vary in your immediate area. So if you are interested in saving money on gas, check out GasBuddy.com, but not while you are driving!
