Garmin - eTrex Legend HCx GPS —
The Garmin Legend HCx (not to be confused with other Legend models) is a (H) high sensitivity, (C) color display model, with (x) expandable memory. The expandable memory is through separately purchased micro SD cards, up to 2 Gigabyte. Although it does not have all the fancy features of the newer Colorado series, for half the price you get a device that is just as sensitive in terms of navagation and features needed for hiking. It can easily be used one handed. Some claim that it is designed for left handed people, others for right. Try one in a store to judge for yourself. The things you are losing are the new higher resolution display in the Colorado, although some complain that the Colorado display is too dark. The other major feature that the higher priced Colorad has is a setup for paperless geocaching. However, by using the POI feature on the Ledgend this is possible with a little extra effort. Search forms.groundspeak.com for this. Finally, if you want an electronic compass and a barometric altimeter you need to move up to the Vista HCx. However, my personal preference is to use a traditional mechanical compass that never needs calibration or runs out of batteries. It gets you out of the woods even when your GPS dies. The only down side is not the GPS itself, but the poor quality topo maps that Garmin is producing. Third party maps are slowly becoming available, some for free. So search for them at ground speak before you buy from Garmin
Finally be careful when you look at the prices here, Unfortunately Garmin GPS names can make it easy to confuse one device with another.Apparently even the vendors are confused, or not too careful. The lower prices here are for the Etrex Legend, NOT the Etrex Legend HCx. This Legend (not HCx) is an older device that does not have the same features nor performance. Be careful and make sure you know what model you are purchasing.
