The Garmin nuvi 750 GPS unit is reasonably priced with high-end features. It requires an initial download of updated maps before using. This took about three hours on a DSL connection so I did it overnight when I wasn't using the computer for anything else. The unit worked perfectly from the start. The operating manual is a bit light on details but much can be learned by going on-line to the Garmin website and browsing. For example it took several trial and error attempts before determining how to insert a space between letters or words. It may be because I am not familiar with the keyboard layout and symbols used for the unit. The logic of having the eraser erase the adjacent character is somewhat faulty. The unit has several "voices", male and female, that can be chosen for the audible directions; however, all fail to pronounce correctly several streets in our area. The lead time before a direction change or turn is usually long enough but not consistent. Often you are approaching a street and the unit indicates verbally that you should turn but it really means to turn at an upcoming street. If a turn is missed then a correction is made in the logic and a revised route is plotted. It would be very desirable if the unit has a "learning" mode. I tend to travel side streets and routes to avoid known congested areas or school zones. The unit is constantly saying "recalculating". If it could "learn" the route to a frequently used location according to the direction traveled it would be very desirable.
