We bought this unit while visiting our daughter in California (2009).  We're not used to cities running into cities in Alaska so finding our way around became a challenge in California.  We easily found our way around southern California without our daughter (she was at work).  It was fun to play with when we got back to Alaska but we really thought we wouldn't need it here.  Then one day we found a good snow plow for sale on Craig's list.  Okay, there was no way we would have found this person's home without the unit.  It gives you plenty of notice for when you need to turn (unlike someone else reading a map).  It lets you (and the passenger) know how fast you're going and the posted (if your unit is up to date) speed limit.  Finding a posted speed limit in Alaska can be a challenge in some areas.

It didn't show our home in Alaska but that didn't surprise me as the property was recently subdivided prior to our purchase in 2007.  The update took forever but was well worth it when streets started showing up that were previously absent.

Everyone needs one of these, especially if your husband is reading the map.

I got this GPS for Christmas, and have used it A LOT since then.  I am rather "directionally challenged" so I am constantly going on "adventures" (even a 3 year old called me out on the fact that my adventures mean we are lost).  This GPS has some great features; you can look up different area attractions; entertainment, stores, hospitals, gas stations and so on and it gives you the distance to each place (great when you are traveling and getting low on gas, or need food).

The holder is pretty cool, it suctions onto the windshield, so you can switch cars with it, or take it off when parking in a city (a lot of times in rough areas, people will break into cars that just have the holder on the dashboard; hoping to score the GPS.  The suction works really well too.

Another nice feature with this GPS is that it has a light sensor, so if it gets dark while you are driving with it; the display light will darken too automatically.

This is not the top of the line GPS, but works wonderfully for the price.  One complaints is that it is not up to date on roads that have been changed in the last 2 or 3 years.  Also, you cannot pick an alternate route to a destination (at least I have not figured out how to do this).  But if ou drive off course, it will automatically recalculate a new route :)

It has definitely come in handy.

    Good try, but iffy product

    By

Comments about Garmin Forerunner 205 GPS Receiver and Sports Watch:

When I used the Garmin Forerunner 305, I did not think much negative about this item, but after switching to the Garmin Forerunner 310xt and the quick release kit, I see how poorly this was designed. The plastic mount is designed to fit on a handlebar like a road bike, but many triathletes prefer to mount on the stem or the aero bars. It took some creativity to figure a way to mount it and have it in sight still.  Once I had it mounted, getting the 305 in and out was still a challenge at times.  I have heard of many people having issues launching their device on bad roads and thought nothing of it until one day mine launched on a bumpy road.  I managed to find the device with some road rash, but from then on never trusted the mount again.

The mount works, but I have trouble trusting it after using the much more improved 310xt mount.  I would urge Garmin to redesign this, but since the 305 is out of production, I would think this wont happen.

    It is a wounderful co-pilot.

Comments about Garmin Forerunner 205 GPS Receiver and Sports Watch:

The nuvi By Garmin is exactly what I needed in my work truck.  As a commercial electrician, I am sent from place to place to service electrical equipment.  Sometimes these places are hours away from each other.

Before I got the nuvi, I would have to access the internet for a map or wrestle with a paper map while trying to drive.  With the nuvi, all I have to do is enter the physical address, street and city name on the handy touch screen and I'm on my way.  The voice guides me right to the front door of the location.

No more wasted time on directions, even during bad rainy weather, the GPS still functions.  I also like that you can hook up to the internet and get free upgrades like different vehicle selections and different voices.

I would recommend the nuvi to anyone I know, it's an awesome co-pilot.

Keeping pace for the track team with a coach on my wrist!

    By

    from Medford, NJ

Comments about Garmin Forerunner 205 GPS Receiver and Sports Watch:

I take my Forerunner 205 with me everywhere! It's great because I can use it for walking, running, or bicycling. It's really easy to use - before I would use sites like gmap-pedometer and mapmyrun.com to keep track of my miles. Now I don't have to waste time clicking all the streets I've been on!

As a member of my school's track team, it's important to me to keep track of mileage and pace. This little gadget does it automatically! I just hook it up to my computer after each run, and it tracks my distance, pace, time, and calories burned. The unit will even provide a map of where I've been, so I never get lost on trails anymore!

The only drawback for me is the unit's size. As a girl, it looks a little bulky on my wrist. It doesn't bother me on the road, but it would probably look better on a man's wrist. I know of other runners who use these and love them. Older runners would probably prefer to use the Forerunner 305 with the heart rate monitor, so they can keep an even pace and not overexert themselves.

The Forerunner 205 is a must get for any serious runner or biker

    By

Comments about Garmin Forerunner 205 GPS Receiver and Sports Watch:

I bought the Garmin Forerunner 205 GPS watch over a year ago after using Nike+ for over a year. I had Nike+ calibrated correctly, or so I thought, until I actually purchased the Forerunner 205. What I thought was 1 mile on Nike+ was actually 0.92 miles on my Garmin, which means my pace was slower than I thought and thus, my workouts were misleading. This device is 98% precise, you can upload your runs to Garmin Training Center software for Mac and PC and you can upload it to Garmin's Connect website so you can share with others and follow your run on google maps. The only downside is that sometimes, it takes over 5 minutes to get a solid signal, especially if its cloudy or rainy. If you are an avid runner or training for an event, this device is a must get, hands down. You can get the 305 if you want a heart rate monitor but since I had no use for that, I got the 205 and I couldn't have asked for more.

Garmin Forerunner 205 Watch is FABULOUS!!

    By

    from Elverta, CA

Comments about Garmin Forerunner 205 GPS Receiver and Sports Watch:

I bought this item about two-three years ago.  I purchased it while training for a race.  I was worried about injury and wanted to track my speed so that I could make sure I didn't run too hard or too fast to prevent and damage to my legs.

The item came in a nice box with software to sync with my computer, as well as a charging station.  It was very easy to program so that it matched my needs (you can set it to beep if you run too fast, beep if you run too slow, beep every time you run a mile, etc).

On your wrist, it can initially feel big and odd, but after a few minutes of running you completely forget that it is on your arm at all.  I have used it for really long runs of lengths over 20 miles and it never bothered me.

I also liked that you can keep a log of all of your runs (distance, time, calories burned, time started and stopped, and even the route!) in the watch, which you can then sync to your laptop.  So easy to use!

Comments about Garmin Forerunner 205 GPS Receiver and Sports Watch:

I personally use this GPS, This GPS has never let me down and always accurate, I have used many different types of GPS including the NavMan F series.  The Garmin has no memory stick to go bad and has loud voice to be heard over radio.  downloadable upgrades are available and easy to use.

    Good value for the price

    By

Comments about Garmin Forerunner 205 GPS Receiver and Sports Watch:

If you need a basic but reliable GPS, this is a very good choice. I upgraded from a TomTom One 3rd gen and prefer the nuvi. The nuvi finds the satellites faster and more reliably (it should given the age difference of these models).

As a basic unit, it lacks Bluetooth, spoken street names, traffic, etc. but if you're like me and just use it on occaision as a map replacement, this is a great unit.
