Garmin 260W is my first GPS, which I bought before a major trip to Canada, where it was a lifeline through unfamiliar territory. It's relatively inexpensive, easy to use, with a good sized screen, a variety of voice choices (which speak the turns and street names), and has great geographical coverage. The visual display is clear and easy to read, and the lighting changes automatically for clearer viewing under night conditions. The Garmin 260W did unfortunately come out before traffic detection programming became standard on the less expensive models, and I would have liked a lane change suggestion feature. But it's been a rewarding purchase for its price range.
I would recommend buying a portable stand holder base (not included with the unit) so that one can use the GPS in a variety of cars. The included stick on stand base is permanent and has the unfortunate side effect of announcing to the world that you own a GPS.
