GameStop Universal CD/DVD Disc & Lens Kit —

Our GameStop Universal CD/DVD Disc & Lens Kit was purchased at GameStop for $9.99 by my husband specifically to clean our PlayStation 2 lens and games but ended up being used for most of our disc and media lens cleaning needs.

The CD/DVD Disc & Lens Kit

This kit includes GameStop's Disc Cleaner, Lens Cleaning CD, and a 1 oz. pump spray bottle of cleaning liquid. This kit has a dual purpose - to clean game platforms of dust and debris and to clean and remove surface scratches from video games, CD's, and DVD's.

Disc Cleaner

The cleaner's main objective is to remove fingerprints, dirt and dust. This disc cleaner is hand controlled and does not require batteries. To use, open the cleaner and place the disc to be cleaned in the tray with the label facing down. Spray the disc two or three times with the cleaning solution but don't saturate it. It is best to wipe off the disc after spraying. I find the cleaner works best when the discs aren't extremely wet but more damp. There are dual cleaning heads which rest gently on your disc when the cleaner is closed. You turn the knob on the top of the cleaner in a clockwise direction five to ten times and your disc is clean and ready for use.

CD Lens Cleaner

This lens cleaner safely removes dust from your gaming system or other media players. It is a CD with two small fiber cleaning brushes on the shiny side. With the brushes facing downward, insert the lens cleaner into your CD/DVD game system or player. (The instructions state that this cleaner may not work with car single disc CD players.) Press the play button on your game console or player. The audio instruction and the music will play and the voice will tell you to press track 3 when the music stops. You are then told that the cleaning process is complete and to enjoy the music. (I personally do not enjoy the elevator music therefore choose to stop it from playing.)

Systems the Lens Cleaner CD Supports

The lens cleaner part of this kit can be used on all of the following systems: Dreamcast, DVD, Macintosh, PC, PlayStation, PlayStation 2, PlayStation 3, Wii, Xbox. It doesn't specifically say that it can be used on the Xbox 360 so I would inquire about that if you are planning to use it on the 360.

My Experience

As I mentioned earlier, this kit was purchased primarily for use on PlayStation games but, after seeing the fine job it did on those, we decided to use it on our movie DVD's and music CD's. I was very impressed with the results that I got on all the DVD/CD's that we cleaned.

My two boys would get so frustrated with a couple of their PlayStation games because the games kept freezing in mid-play. After a run through the cleaner, the games no longer froze and worked fine.

I had a specific CD that kept skipping on a certain song, and, after running it through the cleaner, the skip is gone. Yay! I apologize for the enthusiasm there but it is my favorite CD.

I have only used the game cleaning disc a couple of times but have had no problems. There is a very low learning curve to this little cleaning disc. My husband has used it on our PlayStation 2 console many times and, after the cleaning process is complete, the system reads faster.

We have had this kit for about a year now and all parts appear to be working well and we have about a half a bottle of the cleaning solution left. We use the lens cleaner about once a month on the PlayStation and have used the disc cleaner on a number of games, CD's, and DVD's. The solution can be purchased separately when it runs out but I have not had the need to see where it is sold since mine is still going strong.

One concern I have about the disc cleaner is that it feels very light and fragile, like it will break at any moment. It should be used very carefully and I wouldn't let my kids use it because I am sure it would end up broken. Considering the low price, that is pretty much to be expected, I guess. Although I have not yet had any problems with the cleaner, I suspect it isn't going to last for years. I wouldn't recommend this kit for the serious user - someone who will be running many discs through it daily or even weekly. It's best for occasional, careful use. Still, it has held up for us thus far!

Final Thoughts

The GameStop Universal CD/DVD Disc & Lens Kit was a good choice at a good price. Anyone who uses CD's or DVD's will surely get some good use out of this product and will save money by not having to replace some of their favorite movies, songs or games. For the reasons stated above, I give this product a 4 star rating. If the cleaner was made of a more durable plastic and didn't seem so fragile, I most likely would have went with 5 stars.
