We bought a GE refrigerator in 2002 at Best Buy. I grew up with GE appliances and I trusted them to build and sell a quality product. We paid around a thousand dollars for a full featured side by side fridge. Our problems with it started immediately. Seven service attempts were made in the next five years. Everything, including the doors, electronics, thermostats were replaced. On our last service visit in 2007 the GE factory service rep looked at me and said, "Don't you get it? We built our house in April 2006 and had a GE refrigerator put in by the builder. It is a very basic model even though it was not that cheap. The only perk is that is has an ice maker. But, the ice maker is extremely loud. You can hear the line running in the middle of the night, so much so that it often wakes me up. We also have had some problems with the temperature. It seems to vary, which is odd. Sometimes, 5 is fine for the freezer, and then other times stuff is frozen beyond belief and other times ice cream is soft. It seems so hard to believe because we don't move the temperature gauge....

Our 17 year old refrigerator was making some strange noises and, I am sure, using a lot of extra electricity, so it was time to replace it. Our main requirement, besides energy efficiency, was a freezer on the bottom.
