GE - Spacemaker Cordless 900mhz Phone —

When we decided to turn the extra room on the back of the house into our computer room, we realized we didn't have a phone line in there. So we resorted to just using our cordless whenever we were down there. That got to be a hassle really as over long periods the phone would be off the charger and that limited talk time a lot. So on a shopping trip to Home Depot I found the GE Spacemaker Phone on a display of other electronics.

    Installation

The closest place to plug in the wireless transmitter was the kitchen which is on the front of the house. It is a simple install as all you do is plug in your phone line to the unit and then plug it into an electrical outlet. Then just raise the antenna to the highest point and your done with the hard part.

The main unit of the phone comes with all the spacers and screws needed to attach it under a cabinet or shelf. I opted to mount it on the shelf of my computer desk just above my monitors, yes plural I have 2  monitors (gadget geek..lol). To make it a bit easier I drilled holes for the screws according to the diagram they also supply. You simply tape it where you want the phone and drill the holes printed on the sheet.

I wanted a little extra space between the phone and shelf too allow air flow between them and allow for a little easier reach for me. The four screws went in easy enough and I tightened them down real snug. Next I plugged in the power cord and set the time and date, an easy job as the phone is clearly marked and the directions easy to read.

    How it works

I never use the answering machine as we have one already and one is more than enough. Well we have 2 as our phone service comes with voice mail but I hate it so I don't use it either. The phone will scan all 40 cahnnels and choose the clearest one to use, I have never had a problem with bad reception, even with the transmitter being 40 feet away and three walls between the 2 units. I have used the phone all over the property and still gotten great reception. From front to back our property is about 330 feet and 185 feet from side to side. It also works inside the garage as I take it with me when I work out there.

It holds 40 numbers in the caller id, has redial and you can page the handset from the base. It is also equipped with a speaker phone and that comes in handy if I am on the computer when the phone rings. The speaker phone is very clear and I use that feature a lot. The battery life of the handset is in the medium to long range I would say. I have used it for a hour or so and never got a low battery beep from it.

My daughter has found the limits of it though....lol She should be a battery tester for companies. She once talked 2 hours before the phone yelled UNCLE so the battery is a nice feature that comes in handy. The handset has a volume control and is also hearing aid compatible. The am/fm works very well and picks up all the local stations here and the display is big enough to see without squinting from 10 feet away.

Setting the time and date is seamless as it has a voice that tells you what you are setting it on. It will tell you the day and time as you press the buttons to set it. My only gripe is that the battery backup does not hold the time and date settings, so when the power even flickers it has to be reset.

    Bottom Line

This is a great product for those that need a phone in a remote location that has no phone outlets. Be it a basement, back room or a garage that needs a phone in it. GE has put quality into the making of this spacemaker phone. Although it is only 900mhz it works amazingly well at great distances. I take it in the back yard to the pool, in my garage and even keep it with me as mow the yard. I have just over an acre and the phone has great reception any where on the property.

It will save you the time and expense of running additional phone lines and still give you what you need and where you need it. There is also a newer version of the Spacemaker that has a cd player in it, so they are updating an already great product.
