Introduction
Over the last several weeks I've been getting more correspondence asking me to talk more about my notion of being Conveniently Green.
Simply put it's a way of improving the environment by making small incremental changes in the way you live or the products you buy that reduce the stress on the environment without requiring you to make any significant behaviorable changes. It's just about making smarter choices. By making small incremental changes we, all of us, can make huge collective contributions to the greening of our planet. It's a Tipping Point kind of thing. There's no need to erect a windmill on your property to produce your own green electricity, nor do you have to publicly hug a tree. Just make slightly better virtually sacrifice-free choices.
Since the changes each of us may make are small and incremental, Conveniently Green is sustainable and that's what really matters. You never miss what you never had to give up. That makes sense doesn't it?
What Conveniently Green is not
No Carbon Offset Credits here. No substituting money for action in Rudi's movement. I won't go into Carbon Offset Credits now, but read up on them. I could be wrong but I see the potential for scandal here that could make Enron look like a Seven Eleven stick-up. Yes, I could be wrong, but I don't think so. It'll take a few years but all good scams do.
One last thought on Carbon Offset Credits. The cynic in me sees a similarity to the American Civil War practice of rich northeastern (and midwestern) draftees paying poor volunteers to take their place at the battlefront. I'll leave you to think on that one for awhile.
GE Soft White CFL 100
Compact Fluorescent Light Bulbs are direct replacements for the ordinary incandescent bulbs we are used to using in our homes. The shapes are different. Most often they will appear as spiral tubes and they usually will fit wherever a conventional bulb will fit.
The newest generation of these bulbs produce a light virtually indistinguishable from that of ordinary light bulbs.
The big advantage
CFLs produce the same amount of light while consuming 75% less energy. A 100W incandescent can be replaced by a bulb needing only 23-26W.
Each bulb will also last much longer. Up to 8,000-10,000 hrs! I like that. Even if the manufacturers are exaggerating a bit, it's a huge improvement over 750-1,500 hours for a conventional bulb.
Our Sacrifice
CFLs are slightly more expensive than a quality long-life incandescent bulb. I buy mine in Sam's Club for about $13.50 for a pack of 6. Not too bad. If you live in a high electric cost state, it's a no brainer from day one. Does this sound like much of a sacrifice to you? It doesn't to me either. CFLs are available in all different sizes, shapes and functions. Over the next several weeks I'll introduce you to a number of the newest developments.
But for now give some thought to joining the Conveniently Green Army. Together, we might just save our planet while sitting back sipping our Cosmopolitans (or Buds).
Regards,
Rudi
