This dishwasher is not worth the money! We picked this dishwasher for three reasons = the first was its relatively inexpensive pricetag - at just over $400 it was a good buy. We also liked the "energystar" rating and thought that it would save us money in energy costs - our family has also become more energy conscious in general the past year and we felt that it would also be beneficial for our "green" concerns. The third reason we purchased this appliance was that GE is one of those brands we have associated with high quality appliances. Now, just over a year after purchasing this item, it has cost us more time and money by FAR than we can ever hope to save if we ever get this appliace to work correctly.
First of all, when the appliance was installed, we continually had trouble with it draining, despite following directions to create a "drain loop" in the hose leading to the sink. After days of fiddling, I finally shoved the loop so far up the wall that the thing had no choice but to drain. If this was the only problem, I would be happy. Then, it would not drain AGAIN - I thought there was a clog and tried to reach into the machine to get at the drain and be sure it was clear of debris. The plastic grate that encloses the drain is badly designed. It is easy to snap off, but IMPOSSIBLE to reinstall without ripping apart the machine. Literally. So, now the plastic grate has to remain off and I must be very careful not to allow any debris into the machine to clog it up. Both of these things, I might have been able to overlook as minor design flaws... however we were always stumped as to why the machine was CONSTANTLY lit up.... it was never in a complete sleep mode. When it suddently refushed to function at all, my husband took apart the console and found out that the computer switches were not set correctly from the factory. He reset the controls. This lemon of a machine went on to function for a glorious month, at which time it refused to allow you to start a new cycle and clear out the old cycle until you literally SLAMMED the door. This machine has no "on/off" button. Herein lies the problem -- the machine will ONLY reset itself automatically upon opening and closing the door. The computer kept misfiring, causing us to slam the door to get a good depression on the internal switch that reset the console. THEN all the door slamming we found out (to our dismay) now caused the switch to go ENTIRELY bad. Now we start the machine with a tiny little screwdriver to precariously reach into the console and manually depress the switch and quickly slam the door before the computer registers an "open door" and refuses to start a cycle. It goes on and on. This machine is a piece of JUNK! It is poorly made AND poorly designed - an awful combination. Out of the about 14 months we have had this machine, it has worked problem free for only perhaps 3 months!
