My GE experience... goes like this.
My husband & I purchased a home in May 2000. We had to gut the kitchen and start over. I was very excited to get all new appliances. We shopped around and decided on the GE Profile Series. We got the gas stove/oven and the OTR microwave. We bought the refrigerator in 2004.
The microwave started malfunctioning at about 3 yrs of its installation. Every time I used it, sparks would fly and it would just go dark. We called a GE service person to come to the house. The charge was $79.95 JUST to ring our doorbell. GE calls this a service charge. The microwave could not be repaired. We were offered a replacement but we had to pay the service charge.
In April 2008, not only did this "replacement" microwave stop working, but our refrigerator also broke. We again called GE to come repair them. This time, the charge to ring our doorbell was $79.95 for EACH appliance. The microwave could not be repaired and GE did not offer a replacement, nor did they offer us a discount towards the purchase of a new one. We STILL had to pay the $79.95 service charge.
The refrigerator was repaired. It needed a new computer chip. The service man unscrewed 4 screws and pulled out the computer chip. He went out to his truck and came back with a new chip and placed it in the receptacle and put the 4 screws back in. The LABOR charge for that was a WHOPPING $250.00. The computer chip was about $200.00.
Last week, my oven stopped working! Imagine my frustration. My husband wrote a letter to the president of GE, in the hopes that they would waive the service charge or the repair charge. Today, I got a call from Bill Bowers. He is the chairman of GE. He got our letter and called to let us know he got our letter and he felt we were entitled to a response. His response was that he is refusing to do anything for us because he could not justify it. When I pressed for a reason, he said because our stove is 9 yrs old and that's all. This is the CHAIRMAN OF GE, and he has the means and the authority to do something and he refused.
I will not even buy a GE light bulb. I am finished with GE. I cancelled my appointment to have the $79.95 service man come ring my doorbell. SAVE YOURSELF AND YOUR FAMILY AND YOUR FRIENDS! DO NOT BUY GE PRODUCTS.
