Working on the campus of a university has its drawbacks when it comes to lunch time.  The campus is crowded with limited places to eat.  You have to walk to most of them because there is very little available parking and the weather is also not always accommodating.  If you leave campus, you face the traffic and students all getting out of class.  It usually takes 30 minutes to get to your destination, so your lunch hour is spent in the car driving.  That is why I bring my lunch to work with me most of the time.  One of the microwaves that is available for our use is a GE Microwave Oven Model JES1136.  It is a small counter-top model that is perfect for occasional use.

GE Microwave Oven Model JES1136

The GE Microwave Oven Model JES1136 comes with a one year warranty from the date of purchase.  The warranty covers any defect in the materials or workmanship of the microwave.  You will be supplied with another unit that will be covered for the remainder of your warranty period.  I think this is cheesy and you should get a full year if something goes wrong with the original microwave, but that is the way the warranty reads!

The GE Microwave Oven Model JES1136 is very easy to use and has several settings and features that make using this microwave a breeze.  The microwave has an LED clock that shows in the top window to the right of the door.  Underneath the clock is your control panel.

It has the following convenience settings:

Popcorn
Beverage
Reheat
Potato
Auto Defrost
Timed Defrost

There are also buttons on the microwave for "Timer", "Clock", "Start/Pause" and "Clear/Off", as well as a push bar for opening the door to the microwave.

The GE Microwave Oven Model JES1136 has 10 power levels.  To change the level, just press "Power Level" and select a number.

Other Features

The GE Microwave Oven Model JES1136 has a removable turntable, which allows for easy cleaning and heating your food evenly.

It also has a child-proof lock on it.  To lock the door to keep small children out of it, just hold down the Clear/Off button.  The control panel will display that the unit is now locked.  Don't ask me how to unlock it, I've tried several combinations and nothing seems to work.  I even consulted the manual, and there are no instructions for unlocking the microwave.  If you know how to do this, please leave me a message in remarks!

The GE Microwave Oven Model JES1136 comes in both a black and white model.  We have the white, which seems to really show a lot of dirt when people have spills and don't clean up after themselves.

My Thoughts on the GE Microwave Oven, Model JES1136

I have used this microwave often in the year that I have been in this department.  It works very well for reheating food or heating frozen dinners.  I have found that the convenience buttons are not always on target.  For instance the popcorn button time is off by about 30 seconds here for the Act II brand.

The GE Microwave Oven Model JES1136 seems to be a fairly good quality of a microwave.  It may be too small for a larger size family, but for 1-4 people it should work out just fine.  It puts out 1100 watts of power and that is on the lower scale for microwaves and make it primarily for reheating over doing a lot of cooking in it.  It is also not very spacious on the interior, and will hold little more than a dinner plate.

I do like the fact that the turntable is removable for cleaning.  We have students that come in and use the microwave too and they don't always keep the kitchen and appliances clean or clean up after themselves.

Recommendation

This is a good microwave for small families, single people or for having in a dorm room.  It is small in size, but large enough to reheat food on a full size dinner plate.  Our GE Microwave Oven Model JES1136 is now 3 years old, so I would say that it is pretty durable and a good buy at under $100.00.

Well, here's another idea I can almost guarantee will work -- this is a child-proof lock, huh? I mean, this is a child-proof lock which is defying all these great academic logical efforts, right? So then the answer is obvious -- turn the damned thing over to a three-year-old and the kid will have it open in ten minutes. (HAHAHAHA!) Okay, I feel better already, my sense of humor is recuperating from trying to find the last thing I misplaced!!!!!! Have a nice weekend!

Hi Anna, that doesn't work! I've tried everything. I figured that one of the guys would be able to figure it out, but so far we are one less microwave on the first floor! Happy holidays to you and your family1

What did we ever do before microwaves!!! Great review! BTW, you mention that the childproof lock is activated by holding down the Clear/Off button until the lock message appears on the panel. Have you tried just holding down the Clear/Off button until the lock message disappears? Merry Christmas to you and I'm sure it's nice to be able to use the microwave at home for lunch for a while!

Small is good. This sounds like a good solution for folks with limited counter space. Appreciate the info.

Ah. Campus gastronomy. I remember that I first used microwave ovens in my community college's "common area" - a little nook in the campus called The Pit. There we had a bunch of outdoor tables with chairs, a place where we could buy soft drinks and snacks from machines, and an industrial-type microwave to heat stuff we either bought from the machines or brought from home. To be honest, I preferred either the hot dogs from the vendor in Building Three or the campus cafeteria in Building Eight (The Food Stop.)
