Frontline Plus didn't do enough to make my dog comfortable.
2 star rating

willing to pay for quality, an animal lover
Pros

easy to apply, a bit less costly than others, kills some but not all fleas

Cons
doesn't kill all my dog's fleas, doesn't live up to claims, didn't work well for Mickey, short acting

I love my 14 pound Jack Russell Terrier and would pay any amount to keep him healthy and happy (and have in vet's bills). Mickey has a flea allergy so, when he has one, it feels like he has 100. And when he has 100, well, he's a hairless, red, mess of a creature.

I tried Frontline Plus Frontline Plus for Dogs & Puppies 11 22 Pounds 3 Applicators to control his fleas in the summertime and was disappointed. Although the claims are big for this product, I found it didn't do the job well enough.

This applies to the back of the neck and then spreads through the skin. It is supposed to kill fleas, flea eggs, and all sorts of nasty stuff.

However, after a week, my dog was itching and scratching like crazy again. I took him to his vet's who gave me Advantage to apply along with some medication to calm his red, irritated skin.

Since I have used the Advantage, our flea problems are gone. There are still a few here and there since I also have three cats, but Mickey isn't suffering and staying up all night chewing himself silly.

Conclusion

For us, Frontline Plus Frontline Plus for Dogs & Puppies 11 22 Pounds 3 Applicators, just doesn't do the job Advantage does. Each applicator is supposed to last a month but I found they only lasted a week and Mick was back suffering.

I'm sticking to Advantage from now on. My dog deserves to be comfortable and Frontline just didn't seem to be able to do that for him.

2 stars.

Yeah, it is a quandary when you try a monthly remedy and it doesn't work. You don't want to add more chemicals to the animal but you don't want to see it suffer for a month either. I have found that, even though Mickey is only 11-13 pounds, if we use the next step up in weight in Advantage, it works like a charm. He's on the cusp of the weight classes and the stronger dose really does the trick. I tried Bio-Spot and no go. He's losing hair and itching all night. I feel so bad. I am going to the vet's Tuesday to get him all fixed up.

Mickey's itching again and losing hair. I got a three month sample of Bio-Spot free and tried it and it has done very little for him. I guess I better get him a steroid shot and Advantage ASAP. He gets so miserable so quickly when he gets even a few fleas.

My dog does have allergies and, if something in the solution is something he's allergic to, then he will go nuts itching. It could be that was why this didn't work for him.

Imagine how poorly it works for a dog who is 160lbs....I paid a fortune for the proper dosing for my IW and don't think that it was effective for more than a few days, but because the chemicals are absorbed into the dog, you don't dare use more or anything else for the full thirty days to prevent a possible toxic build up in the tissues. I had to watch my guy bite, scratch, and chew for three weeks-the best I could do was soothing baths with a tea tree oil shampoo-and he isn't thrilled with bathing, and at 160 lbs neither am I thrilled with having to drag him into the tub.

I have a cat who received a FrontlinePlus treatment every year and seemed to be doing well. We knew he had an allergy and was treating him for that thinking that we did not have a flea problem. Well, this year he has been itching and losing hair and bleeding. He has been suffering terribly. I will be trying Advantage because i cannot stand to see him so miserable. Each time I brought him to the vet, she would tell me that he did not have fleas...that was in January by April he was loaded! I was going to write to the Frontline folks to let them know, but I am glad that I read this review. I will be purchasing Advantage from now on. Thanks, Patty. Connie

sounds like mickey might also be allergic to an ingredient of the frontline. one of our dogs -- the one with the food allergies -- was also EXTREMELY reactive to the "plus" formula; even on antihistamines, the poor guy was scratching himself bloody until it finally cleared his system. our other two dogs, however, have done more than fine with the frontline plus. i think the frontline plus is a great product that offers the broadest-spectrum coverage against fleas and ticks; it's an excellent choice if your dog can tolerate it. for the dogs that can't (like mickey and our fargus), i'm glad there are other safe options available.

My dog is tiny but has that flea allergy that really causes problems. I know a lot of people who like this product (Well, their pets do). I guess Advantage just has something in it that works better for Mickey.

That's too bad. Hanna's done great with this. She's smaller - not sure if that makes a difference. jo
