Frontline Plus —

I love my 14 pound Jack Russell Terrier and would pay any amount to keep him healthy and happy (and have in vet's bills). Mickey has a flea allergy so, when he has one, it feels like he has 100. And when he has 100, well, he's a hairless, red, mess of a creature.

I tried Frontline Plus Frontline Plus for Dogs & Puppies 11 22 Pounds 3 Applicators to control his fleas in the summertime and was disappointed. Although the claims are big for this product, I found it didn't do the job well enough.

This applies to the back of the neck and then spreads through the skin. It is supposed to kill fleas, flea eggs, and all sorts of nasty stuff.

However, after a week, my dog was itching and scratching like crazy again. I took him to his vet's who gave me Advantage to apply along with some medication to calm his red, irritated skin.

Since I have used the Advantage, our flea problems are gone. There are still a few here and there since I also have three cats, but Mickey isn't suffering and staying up all night chewing himself silly.

Conclusion

For us, Frontline Plus Frontline Plus for Dogs & Puppies 11 22 Pounds 3 Applicators, just doesn't do the job Advantage does. Each applicator is supposed to last a month but I found they only lasted a week and Mick was back suffering.

I'm sticking to Advantage from now on. My dog deserves to be comfortable and Frontline just didn't seem to be able to do that for him.

2 stars.

They get you coming and going. I was stuck with several vials too. It just didn't do enough at all. Advantage and Advantix seem to be the only spot treatments that really work for my dog. Advantage for cats works for my cats. I get it online at www.joespetmeds.com and it is MUCH cheaper than at the vet's or a pet store locally.

I agree with you on Frontline not working. This is the 3rd time I've used the product since it came out. The first time, it worked great and I used on my house only cat, just as needed. The last two times, seems like the product is different and doesn't work anymore.

I called entirelypets for a refund and was told too bad, because, "the product has been used", (I bought a 3 mo supply and have 2 left). I called Frontline and because it wasn't purchased from them, they couldn't do anything for me. But, I could call back after I've used the product for 3 months and ask again, (like I'm going to let my pet suffer from fleas that long - idiots).

Good luck getting a refund. Frontline, "Only sells to vets" and the other distributors say to contact Frontline....so I doubt I'll be getting the "Guarantee" stated on the box from anyone. It may cost more getting product from your vet, but at least you have a chance at getting something that works or, your money back. Well, on my way to see the vet for a treatment option...that isn't Frontline.

I agree and don't use it ever. So many have great success but i didn't. I use Advantage or Advantix and it works perfectly for my pets. Maybe slight infestations are taken care of by Frontline but mine are never slight. The fleas drive us all crazy but are gone when I use Advantage/Advantix on my pets. Just don't try Bio Spot! That's much less effective and can really be deadly for some animals.

Frontline is a terrible product. I adopted a puppy from a local shelter and my house was instantly infested with fleas and ticks. I sprayed the house and yards many times, washed all bedding, bathed the puppy in a flea shampoo three times a week. Then put Frontline Plus on her. Within a week I was finding dozens of LIVE ticks crawling on her and LIVE fleas. I did another bath and another dose of Frontline Plus. (2 applications in 30 days.) It is now 2 weeks later and I just picked 3 LIVE ticks off her.

What a joke. Frontline doesn't repel. Doesn't kill. Doesn't do anything but drain my bank account.

My vet bathed my dog with gentle non-flea shampoo and then, once he was dry, applied Advantage and gave him a steroid shot and some allergy pills. He was feeling better after a couple of days. My dog almost was bald. He had bitten his hind quarters red and almost hairless. It was awful. Good luck!

My dog "Lady" , has been on frontline plus for 6 months , she has no fleas or ticks but her skin is dry, scaley, itchy, constantly scratching until she bleeds. It is so bad that she is had a spot on her back that has no hair and now is getting bigger and bigger. I went to the vet but they said keep her on it and let them know if it get worst. By then she might be bald.....My dog is miserable! What did you have to do?

You should never see MORE fleas after applying a flea product like this. My dog is allergic to flea bites and suffered. I didn't like being bit by those critters either. What a waste of money Frontline was for us.

I completely agree. And it's expensive for no results.

GrammaBeverly wrote on Oct 7, 2008 at 9:16PM

I agree. Frontline did not work on my dog. He was very uncomfortable. I called Frontline, and was told to wait because the increased fleas on him was a sign that it was working. This was a lie! So, my dog is not flea free. I am allergic to flea bites, so have had to suffer through the itching as well. Frontline sucks! I will never buy it again!

gregokla wrote on Oct 7, 2008 at 10:02AM

Frontline Plus is worthless. Mom called the customer service number on the box and received a canned answer from their representative. FRONTLINE SHOULD BE REMOVED FROM THE MARKET. It is expensive and DOES NOT CONTROL FLEAS as promised. Using any pesticide product is a benefit vs. risk decision. This product has no benefits.

Yeah, it is a quandary when you try a monthly remedy and it doesn't work. You don't want to add more chemicals to the animal but you don't want to see it suffer for a month either. I have found that, even though Mickey is only 11-13 pounds, if we use the next step up in weight in Advantage, it works like a charm. He's on the cusp of the weight classes and the stronger dose really does the trick. I tried Bio-Spot and no go. He's losing hair and itching all night. I feel so bad. I am going to the vet's Tuesday to get him all fixed up.

Mickey's itching again and losing hair. I got a three month sample of Bio-Spot free and tried it and it has done very little for him. I guess I better get him a steroid shot and Advantage ASAP. He gets so miserable so quickly when he gets even a few fleas.

In response to dedicateddogmom's comment from Aug 26, 2007 at 1:04AM:

My dog does have allergies and, if something in the solution is something he's allergic to, then he will go nuts itching. It could be that was why this didn't work for him.

AWESOMEMOM88 wrote on May 20, 2008 at 3:58PM

Imagine how poorly it works for a dog who is 160lbs....I paid a fortune for the proper dosing for my IW and don't think that it was effective for more than a few days, but because the chemicals are absorbed into the dog, you don't dare use more or anything else for the full thirty days to prevent a possible toxic build up in the tissues. I had to watch my guy bite, scratch, and chew for three weeks-the best I could do was soothing baths with a tea tree oil shampoo-and he isn't thrilled with bathing, and at 160 lbs neither am I thrilled with having to drag him into the tub.

I have a cat who received a FrontlinePlus treatment every year and seemed to be doing well. We knew he had an allergy and was treating him for that thinking that we did not have a flea problem. Well, this year he has been itching and losing hair and bleeding. He has been suffering terribly. I will be trying Advantage because i cannot stand to see him so miserable. Each time I brought him to the vet, she would tell me that he did not have fleas...that was in January by April he was loaded! I was going to write to the Frontline folks to let them know, but I am glad that I read this review. I will be purchasing Advantage from now on. Thanks, Patty. Connie

sounds like mickey might also be allergic to an ingredient of the frontline. one of our dogs -- the one with the food allergies -- was also EXTREMELY reactive to the "plus" formula; even on antihistamines, the poor guy was scratching himself bloody until it finally cleared his system. our other two dogs, however, have done more than fine with the frontline plus.

i think the frontline plus is a great product that offers the broadest-spectrum coverage against fleas and ticks; it's an excellent choice if your dog can tolerate it. for the dogs that can't (like mickey and our fargus), i'm glad there are other safe options available.

My dog is tiny but has that flea allergy that really causes problems. I know a lot of people who like this product (Well, their pets do). I guess Advantage just has something in it that works better for Mickey.

That's too bad. Hanna's done great with this. She's smaller - not sure if that makes a difference. jo
