We have fleas on both our cat and our 12 week old puppy.  After recommendations by vets and a good pet shop we used Frontline Plus.  Roughly 5-6 hours later the puppy was vomiting quite badly and then had convulsions.  When told we had given Frontline, the vet did not mention that these were possible side effects.  She had us worried about every other possibility.  We have since found a few sites which mention possible side effects.  These include:
Loss of appetite, underactivity, convulsions, whining, barking, crying
(vocalization), body twitches/tremors, overactivity, salivation, stiffened limbs,
unsteady gait, incoordination, labored breathing
Of these, our dog showed convulsions, salivation, unsteady gait, incoordination and laboured breathing.  Fortunately the symptoms seemed to have passed a day later.  But we are now convinced that this is a poison that this dog should never have again.  We have used Frontline and Frontline Plus before without these extreme effects, but it is a poison, and we do not know what other more subtle problems may have been caused. We have decided to find other, healthier solutions to the flea problem.

I have a 4 year old female german shorthair pointer who is our house pet and hunting companion, who has had 5 seizure's since Dec. 07. None the first 2 years. Even as a puppy she showed some allergic reactions to some of her shots at the vet. Just recently after treating her with Frontline plus she had a seizure 3 days later, on Oct. 27th 09. The last time I treated her in late July she had a seizure 13 days later in early August. I think I'm starting to see a pattern. The last two times her bowels also let loose, Plus she loses some hair the day of application along her spine between the shoulder blades. I'll try and find my old calanders to see if there was an application before her other seizures.

In response to yorkie2's comment from Mar 22, 2009 at 10:09PM:

We just applied Frontline Plus to our 10 pound Shih Tzu. Within 12 hours, she was doing the exact same thing as described here. I called Merial directly who sent me to their Frontline division - I was told that IN RARE cases - this does happen... we will NEVER put this on our dog again. Our vet has recommended that we bathe her in Dawn Dish Detergent to get the remaining residual product off of her... We have an appointment this afternoon. Our Shih Tzu is a very tiny one, and this caused quite a scare for us... On the POSITIVE side - Frontline has offered to review our case and possibly reimburse us for the product price, and any treatment costs that we may incur. They were VERY helpful and kind, but there really should be more warning about the potential for this!

It is absolutely critical that you ONLY put the frontline where there is no way the dog can ingest it. That usually means back of the neck, top of shoulder blades. If you get too low, the dog can get to it, ingest it, and have the reactions described :(

We also had a scare with our 4 lb Yorkie the beginning of March 2009. I always split the Frontline Plus vial between my 5 1/2 lb female Yorkie (age 8) and my 4 lb male Yorkie (age 6) as previously recommended by our old vet (in NC). I use the vial for under 22lbs dogs and puppies. Within 12 hours of applying Frontline Plus, my 4 lb Yorkie began to seize, stumble over, twitch, breath rapidly, vocalize, act dazed and confused. After holding him and reassuring him, he came out of it (less than 5 minutes). In the mean time, I had called our vet. We immediately took him to the vet for lab work. He had had a seizure. I mentioned to our vet that I had given him Frontline Plus and his monthly Heartguard Plus (1/2 tablet) and the vet (in GA) did not think this had caused his seizure. We watch our small dogs carefully. There is nothing in our yard for them to be poisoned by. We do not use pesticides on our lawn or in our house. We are also very careful about what we clean our house with. We have not changed his diet or allowed him to eat any thing unusual. We have always used Frontline Plus. But I wonder if this was a bad batch. It was the first vial taken out of a new box. (LOT # D65551AI) Has anyone else had this problem? Please check your lot numbers. We are going to stop using Frontline Plus for now. Thanks.
