With 9 cats (3 pets and 6 fosters) in the house at the moment, flea preventative can get really expensive very quickly. This summer I tried to take the cheap route by using BioSpot and Zodiac Spot-On flea treatments which were only about $5 per dose. Unfortunately neither of those products worked on our bionic fleas and I watched the cats scratch and chew themselves like it was their full-time job. Finally, I bit the bullet and ordered three 6-month packs of Frontline Plus for about $60 each. The two month supply for all of our cats cost almost $200. My husband was not happy when he saw the bill, but even he conceded that it would be worth it if Frontline did in fact kill the fleas that just wouldn't die.
The active ingredients in Frontline Plus for Cats are fipronil and (S)-methoprene. Somehow they wind up stored in your cat's oil glands so they are continuously reapplied for at least a month after you apply it between their shoulder blades. It is waterproof and lasts on skin even after baths, swimming, and self-grooming. Frontline Plus kills fleas, flea eggs, ticks, and chewing lice on cats and kittens that are at least 8 weeks old. The company claims that this product will kill 100% of fleas within 24 hours and that one application will work continuously for somewhere between one month and six weeks.
I did a flea-application blitz and hit all 9 cats within an hour. I watched them carefully for the several hours in the evening after the application and was disappointed to see them still chewing and scratching. At $10 per dose, I was expecting a fast-acting miracle! I checked them out again when I got home from work the following day and they seemed comfortable and content. I was afraid that the fleas may have simply decamped from the cats and decided to attack the humans in the house, but we haven't had any flea bites. Frontline Plus seems to have truly killed them all. I couldn't be happier with the way that this product killed the fleas within one day and provided relief and comfort to the cats and fosters in the house. I've learned my lesson and won't try to skimp on flea control products again. Highly recommended!!
