Fresh or Frozen Rabbit —

Being raised in the country has its advantages, plenty of hunting opportunities are all around you. Besides being able to have wild game, you also have fresh veggies and my friends that means some great stews can be made. Rabbit was a favorite when I was growing up and Mom and Grandma made a killer (no pun intended...lol) Rabbit Stew.

Rabbit

Of course your local butcher can also allow you to taste this great little secret and some grocery stores also carry it frozen. Rabbit is a dark meat with a mildly gamy taste and with the Rabbits strong legs and muscular body it is also a lean meat, which means it is also good for you.

Whether you fry it, add it to stew or roast it you are in for a tasty treat from the wild kingdom. Stew is a great way to showcase the flavor but being country Fried Rabbit is also just as good to me. Pair it with some fresh Kale and Mashed Potatoes with gravy and you have a great meal.

Rabbit Nutritional Facts

3 ounce serving size:

Calories 150, Total Fat 5g with 1g being saturated, Cholesterol 105mg, Sodium 40mg, Carbohydrates 0, Fiber 0, and Protein 28g...Add in Calcium 2% D.V., Zinc 15% D.V., Iron 25% D.V., Riboflavin 4% D.V., Niacin 25% D.V., Folate 2% D.V., Phosphorus 20% D.V., and  Magnesium 8% D.V. plus Vitamin B-6 15% and B-12 90%

Hows that from only 3 ounces of Rabbit???

Bottom Line

Rabbit is not only tasty but also very good for you and because it is a lean meat you don't have to feel guilty about serving it. There are many ways to prepare it so you can have it different ways and yes it is good on a BBQ grill! Treat yourself and your family to the great taste and eat healthy in the process!

Thank you very much....what time did you say dinner was?...lol Of all you listed shell cracker is the only one I haven't had....to be honest I am not sure what it even is....;)

I agree with you, rabbit is very tasty and good for you. My husband does a lot of hunting and fishing, so we always have a freezer full of meat. We eat deer, rabbit, squirrel, wild hog, dove, quail, duck, pheasant, turkey, bass, crappie, blue gill, shell cracker and catfish. We hardly ever buy any meat from the grocery store, it is so much cheaper to pay a processor to do the deer and wild hog and you get a lot more meat for a lot less money. He does the rest of the critters himself. Great review!!

It is very tasty and once you get by the idea of eating rabbit you know what you've been missing...;)

Hi, Ron! This rabbit meat sounds like it is really a valuable food -- I know it is but I'm almost ashamed to admit that I can hardly bring myself to eat a rabbit. I have aways really loved them. It sounds silly I know -- after all, there I was a few months ago, knocking back venison like it's going out of style -- but somehow eating rabbit may be a struggle. BUT they do say it is delicious and this was such a good review! Well, Buddy, I'll catch ya later!

Most bigger grocery chains carry it frozen (not stew though) mostly breaded but some carry it without breading.....;)

There used to be a casual-French restaurant in our neighborhood that would put rabbit stew on the menu every fall. Sadly, they closed down years ago, and I haven't had any rabbit since. I've have to go "hunting" around the city for it.

LOL at your title. I could only eat a rabbit if I didn't know ahead of time it was a rabbit. I'm not a very adventurous eater. ;)

LaurieM wrote on Sep 18, 2008 at 1:39PM

Just one question .... does it taste like CHICKEN? haha!

CyndiA wrote on Sep 18, 2008 at 9:43AM

Haven't had any for years. But, yes, it is very good.
