After my cat suddenly passed away, I went through my house to clean out and put away all of her things.  I knew that I would keep some items in case we adopt another cat someday.  However, my pantry held 2 dozen new cans of premium canned cat food that I didn't want to go to waste.  I knew that I couldn't donate the items to Goodwill or AmVets, so I turned to a source that I had read about online:  Freecycle.

Freecycle (www.freecycle.org) is a community of users who believe in recycling unwanted items and keeping them out of the landfills.

The main premise of this international organization is:

"to keep usable items out of the landfill.  By using what we already have on this earth, we reduce consumerism, manufacture fewer goods, and lessen the impact on the earth."

Freecycle members offer their household items--for free--and respondents are responsible for picking them in a timely manner.  Keep in mind, that although you are eligible for tax breaks if you donate unwanted items to a 501(c)(3) charity, Freecycle donations have no similar tax benefit to the donor.

I went to the Freecycle website for instructions on how to register and join the community.  Within a day or two, I had completed the sign-up process and I was ready to make my first offer.  The list owner of my particular community sent me a detailed email about how the system works and what types of items are acceptable.  I opted to receive the email alerts in a digest form so that I wasn't bombarded with individual emails throughout the day.  The only problem with the digest mode of communicating is that by the time you get the daily email, the item you're interested in has probably already been promised to someone else.  With Freecycle, you do need to act fast in order to get the items you want.

I typed a short message describing the offer and giving a general idea of my location.  Within hours, I received four replies from interested people.  I was touched that each of the respondents expressed more concern about the loss of my pet than they did about what I was offering.  I posted another quick email notifying the group that the items were spoken for, but that I would select the next person on my list in case of cancellation.

I put the cat food in a box and set it by my garage door where it was promptly picked up as promised.  Later that evening, I received a lovely thank you email letting me know how much her kitties enjoyed their meal.

Overall, it was a positive experience, and I highly recommend joining a Freecycle group in your community

What a thoughtful thing for you to do. You took a sad situation and turned it around into a positive one for someone else. Sounds like a great website. P.S. Sorry for the late rating. I had a family emergency and am just now catching up!

I always set an hour aside after my rummage sale every year. We say if it's going out to the rummage it isn't coming back in :) I will put things here and there on our local Freecycle and boy are they quick to respond! Blew my mind!

I'm so sorry about the tragic death of your lovely pet. All animals are wonderful but cats are really special. My aunt's cat died a few years ago and to this day I still automatically look for her to come running up to me when I enter my aunt's house. I am sure wherever your dear kitty is, she misses you just as much as you miss her.

Every time I have something I donate it to the local charity resale. If it's something they can't use I find someone else. Freecycle would come in handy if I didn't live in such a large city.

I use it all the time. In fact I signed up in Florida when I found a coffee maker I wasn't going to pack up for my mom and someone got it. Glad it didn't end up in the landfill. Jo

Freecycle is a great way to give others things we no longer need or want, I love it as I have felt a good feeling by sharing a few things with people in need! ;) Ron

I love the concept, but from time to time have been a little disappointed with the results, unfortunately it's not the service but some of the people who use it. Great review.
