I'm a college student down here in the Frederick area. The first time I went to the emergency room was when I had taken a severe fall and cracked my back on the side of a stair. When I entered the emergency room, I had to wait three hours on a Tuesday night JUST to get a bed. I finally saw a doctor about an hour after I got in there. He had sent me back for x-rays, then said they were negative and to leave. When I went home, I went to my other doctor, who is based in Thomas Jefferson University Hospital in Philly, he had told me that I had three hairline fractures in a vertebrae and that if I had fallen again, I would have been paralyzed from the waist down. Thank god I decided to get a second opinion or I wouldn't be walking.
Another issue happened this week. I have been having stabbing pains in my side for two days, and decided to go to the emergency room to get it checked out. Thank GOD my boyfriend came with me, or I don't know what I would have done. The tech there had NO idea what she was doing, and actually asked my boyfriend to help her (he has NO medical knowledge whatsoever). Once she was finally done gathering all of the syringes that she should have had before she started poking me for an IV, she takes one out, and squirts blood all over my arm and her. I was in severe pain, so she gave me morphine. She said to press the nurse call button if I needed more. Well, the morphine wore off in about two hours, and I was back in horrible pain, and I had asked for more, and by the time they got more of it, it was three hours later and I was already signing the discharge papers. The prescription that he had given me had side effects of SEVERE STOMACH PAIN and nausea. Mind you, those are the two reasons why I went into the hospital to begin with. So, I took that medication, thinking they were just side effects. Well, now I feel worse then I did before I even went in. I never felt comfortable in their hospital.

I think your review is very telling of the type of care you may experience at this hospital and I thank you for your report.

All meds that are taken by mouth have the possible side effect of stomach pain and nausea.
It would have been helpful if you told what the tech asked your boyfirend to help her with--especially since you imply it was something that would have required "medical knowlegde". Just so you are aware it is very difficult and sometimes impossible to have a needle in someone and switch one and off syringes to draw blood without blood leaking...the tech could have started the IV and stuck you seperately to draw blood but she was trying to save you being stuck twice dispite the fact that it leads her at much higher risk of being contaiminated by your blood. HAd she stuck you speratly there would have been very little risk of any blood leakage.
Also would have liked more info on the "nurses hands being very dirty" and what exactly that meant.
I'm sorry you you feel your 3 hrs for your visit was too long. In the future I would suggest only using the emergency room for emergencies and utilizing your primay physician or an urgent care center for pain that has been going on for days. Unfortunetly an emergency room is misused and that leads to long waits as the true emergencies are seen first.
Again curious- what did your Dr in Philly did to ensure you didn't fall over the 3-6 months it takes for a fracture to heal that was able to prevent paralysis? Were you in am immobilizer?

All medications have side effects, but what confuses me is you give it a 1 star rating, yet you recommend it to others? Ron
