My 19 year old daughter, Anna was pregnant and her due date was October 31, 2007. She had a wonderful pregnancy with no complications and no morning sickness. However, she was 6 months pregnant when she confirmed her pregnancy.
On the 29th, the health nurse stopped by for a visit. Anna kept going to the bathroom and complaining because she could not control her bladder. The nurse thought it was a normal thing because of the baby pushing on everything in side and left us with that thought.
On the 30th Anna had an appointment with her OB/GYN. Her control at this point was non-existent. We went to the doctor and he told us her water was broke and we should take her to the hospital.
As usual, the hospital staff was extremely kind and polite. Anna had pre-registered, so check-in was very quick, and soon she was settled in the birthing room in the birth section of the hospital. We had gone for a visit the Saturday before and I couldn't believe how things had changed in the 35 years since I had given birth.
The nurses were in and out of the room all day, checking her vitals and making her comfortable. By evening she still had not started labor. They gave her medicine to induce the labor and around 2 a.m. her pains began. I spent the night and slept on the sofa in the delivery room when Anna was settled and quiet. The staff gave me sheets, blanket and pillows for my comfort.
The morning of the 31st, Anna still had not gotten very far in her delivery and we spent the whole day together with the nurses poking and prodding her helping her to deliver the baby. When the shift of doctors changed at 5 p.m. Anna still was having trouble delivering. Dr. Thomas, a cute little black lady, who looked like she was about 16 years old, came in and announced Anna was going to surgery for a Caesarean and I was invited to come too.
I donned my blue gown, hat and slippers. When the stage was set, I was escorted to a chair beside of Anna. All I could see was my daughter's beautiful face, but having been there twice, I knew what was happening. It wasn't long before Dr. Thomas was announcing the birth of a beautiful baby boy. The time logged on the birth was 6:53 p.m. October 31, 2007.
A neonatologist took the baby to a warming light and they swiftly wiped him clean and wrapped him in a blanket and crowned him with a little hat. A nurse took over the care of my new grandson, ECB. Then I was invited to go with the baby to the nursery to check his vitals and first bath. He weighed in at 7 lbs 2 ozs and 19 ¾ inches long. Head and chest measured 13 inches.
After my husband and another daughter came by to see the baby, we went down to the delivery room and picked up Anna's personal belongings to be moved to a postpartum room for the remainder of our stay. That would be until the morning of November 3rd. Again I was given appropriate bedding to spend the night.
Over all the staff was for the most part friendly and kind. ECB was allowed to spend as much time in the room and Anna wanted. When she was tired, she could send him back to the nursery where he would get expert care.
The security of the birth wing is really good. In addition to the ID bracelet on infant, mother and me and anklet on the infant, there was also a box on the infant's ankle. If you got too close to a doorway with the baby the entire wing would lock down and no one could get in or out.
I have heard many mixed reviews from friends and family over the years about Frederick Memorial Hospital, but truthfully I have never had a problem there. I would recommend for the care they provide. However, it is true that many times in cases such as trauma and heart, there are better hospitals. FMH will send patients to hospitals such as Johns Hopkins, Washington Medical Center, Baltimore Shock Trauma or Washington Children's Hospital to receive the special care they need for specific problems.
So if you wonder where I have been, after reading this you know I have been wrapped around the ten little fingers and ten little toes who has made an appearance at our house. And just so you don't get any ideas.....he's a keeper.
