Franceca's Boutique is a cute little boutique shop that has reasonably priced trendy clothes, jewelry and handbags. They are located throughout the U.S. and have several locations in the Chicago area.

When I am looking for something stylish, but very "today", I pop into Francesca's to see what they have. I generally walk out with something that will jazz up an outfit. I have to admit that I never much talked with any of the staff members so I dont know how their customer service stacked up. But, I just learned and it wasnt great!

My most recent experience... another disappointing one. What's up lately?
I recently went to Francesca's Boutique in Evanston and bought a bunch of jewelry and dresses for my sister-in-laws. As a thank you gift for spending hundreds of dollars, they gave me a $20 gift card. Awesome! What a great perk.

I realized the next morning when I went through my bags that they never gave me the gift card. I thought they put it in one of the boxes, but it wasnt there. Ooops.  I was soo busy that week and didnt have a chance to pop into the store so I called over and told them as soon as I noticed. They graciously told me they had it, forgot to put it in the bag and would pop it in the mail to me. Wow. I was so impressed with how attentive they were.

Well, now here I am 1 month later and I still dont have the gift card. Weird! I called over to the store tonight and after about 5 conversations with college student #1 (did I really do all that for $20?), we realized that they mailed my gift card to the wrong address. In their system, they had my address 1 digit off.  According to them, my neighbor has it. My 90 year old neighbor Delores across the street must be holding it hostage!

So, I called my neighbor Delores at the "incorrect address" and asked her. She said she never received anything to my attention.

I called back over to the store and told him that my neighbor didnt get it either. Were they certain it ever left the store or was it returned to the sender?  He told me that it isnt their fault-- I left it there- and I am responsible. I reminded him that I didnt leave it there-- I never got it. Then, I asked to talk to the manager.

Okay, I have invested way too much time. I should just stop.......

Now, the manager gets on the phone. College student #2.  The manager (yes, manager) proceeded to tell me there was nothing they could do. They mailed it to me, and if I gave them the wrong address for their files, it was my error. WHAT? Last I checked I knew where I lived. They just typed my address wrong. I can say with 100% certainty that I didnt give Francesca's my wrong address. The manager then read me the back of the card saying it was not their responsibility if it were lost or stolen. Wait! It wasnt lost NOR stolen. It was just sent to the wrong person by them!

I then realized that the effort I was spending to get a $20 gift card was crazy! I was thoroughly annoyed with the person and their absolute lack of customer service. I guess it was not about the $20, but rather about the sensibility and principle. I was so irked.

Despite thinking Francesca's clothes are cute (albeit not well made, but cute!), I just dont want to go back in.   I am sure I will get over it and go back at some point, but in the mean time, I am annoyed. Really annoyed over $20. (did I just admit that!)

So true. It seems to me that people do not care about you as a customer anymore and GOOD customer service really decides for me where I shop and /or eat out. If I don't get treated as I should be , I let them know and don't go there. AS a purchaser for my company, I do this everyday and it is important to me . As the Bibile says to "treat others as you would be treated".

Chico's was crossed off my permanent shopping list because of a horrible experience at the Naperville store. That is a favorite store of my moms and when I attempted to spend $500 dollars at Christmas I ended up walking out of in disgust without a single piece of clothing in tow. I'm still too pissed to write a fair review of the experience. Maybe when I get over it I will attempt to give it a shot.

A lack of good customer service is one of my biggest pet peeves. The fact that they can't admit to their own error would annoy me as well, and I'd have exactly the same reaction that you're having.

I think, overall, that the changing mores and lifestyles (I almost used "folkways," a term I learned in Psych 10001) has a great deal to do with the decline of customer service in general. Either (a) most employees in stores and other "customer-reliant" businesses are there as part of their "climb up the ladder of success" curriculum vitae and don't have any emotional investment in making their employer look good, or (b) American society has changed so radically over the past 40 years that the "helpful, attentive, and friendly" employee is now a figure of the mythology of the "Good Ol' Days." I'm really sorry that you had such a lousy experience over an issue that could have been easily been resolved by an apology, the issuing of a new card and a genuine "mea culpa."

How stupid of them! For the cost of saying "Sorry ma'm, we'll get another one right out to you", they've lost a good customer at least temporarily. Great review!

The same thing happened to me at a website but for a $200.00 order. Boy that burns me. I still haven't gotten a refund from anyone but I will, oh yes, I will. I fight until I win! You should too. This review will go a long way. Just send an email to them with the URL. I bet they suddenly decide to send your gift card immediately. It's amazing what a negative review can do. Good luck!

Yes, real customer service is dead! There are a lot of hollow words, like thank you and our customers are what really counts, but in the end all that matters is the bottom-line. Good Will is also apprarently dead, it used to be a counted as a corporation’s asset, but apparently they don’t teach that in Business School anymore!

I think you should stick to shopping online for a bit. :)

There are many places out there like this. If you don't spread the word, then we never know. I believe in letting people know when you receive poor service - and great service! Personal feeling these days - kids are much less respectful than I was at thier age. The owner of the store should retrain these folks or give jobs to people who appreciate having one.

I would have spent just as much time as you did. I would be really upset too but hopefully by writing the review, it will ward off others from getting treated as badly as you did.

I don't think you should "get over it" and return, just write that store off your list.

Seriously, does anyone get any kind of customer service training anymore? I remember when I worked in retail the customer was ALWAYS right - now, it seems more like the customer is always wrong! Sorry you had another bad experience with a store - I'm glad you shared it with us!

$20 is a lot when you don't get it though ;) I had the same thing happen though somewhere else. They changed the zipcode and state cause they never heard of Clearwater, Ks so they sent it to Florida instead and tried to blame me!! Even changed it in my customer file as well. Here I thought I knew where I lived ;-) Seems like customer service has gone downhill the past few years! Ron
