Neil Gaiman is an imaginative fellow, and this collection is a bunch of oddities, in more ways than one.  Gaiman is good at creating atmosphere in a way that doesn't bore me to tears.  In many of the stories in this collection, we get a snapshot of a gruesome life or one event in a life.  There's a sense that more has happened and more will happen.  "Feeders and Eaters" in particular stuck out (at least as I think on it now) as grisly, juxtaposing common people in an ordinary setting with a horrifying situation.  Other stories treat death in a more lighthearted style.
