Ready to people-watch?
Tattoed teens, suntanned seniors, bikini girls, father/son fishing teams, happy toddlers . . . they're all at Fort Myers Beach, having the time of their life. You will be, too!
Fort Myers Beach: Very laid back
This casual little beach town is not lacking for things to do, yet it retains a low-key, family orientation. The beach is wide and soft, while the Gulf of Mexico is big and warm, and usually gentle on the surf. Buy or rent a beach umbrella, park yourself in a comfy lounge chair, dig your toes into the sand. Man, you have got it made: you're on Fort Myers Beach! Beach-walking, pool time, fishing on the pier, sunset cruises, and heaping plates of fresh seafood . . . your family will share great memories of this fun little Florida beach town.
Don't Miss Times Square & The Pier
In high season (Jan - April) the Times Square pedestrian area has live entertainment: all sorts of street performers, including jugglers, magicians, musicians and more. Kids love to watch these shows, and so do adults. Nearby is a plethora of ice cream shops, pizzerias, a Greek restaurant or two, loads of seafood joints, and the famous fishing pier. This end of the island is bustling; it's a real hang-out, with plenty of action and great people-watching. Teens love it. Be sure to catch a sunset on the fishing pier, and if you're an angler, pack your gear!
The Quiet South End
Romance is possible, too, and lovers might do well to head to the island's quiet south end, near Lover's Key, in fact! Condos and rental homes are right on the beatiful beach (hotels, too) and Lover's Key offers another gorgeous beach, as well as nature trails, kayak rentals and a concession stand in the park. It's a "don't miss."
When to Go, and Getting There
Locals will tell you: the best months are April, May and November. Dec and Jan are the only 2 months when you might not get to enjoy lots of sunbathing (but you might!). February and March are high season; rates drop 2 weeks after Easter. Summer is hot and humid, so plan on swimming or napping in the afternoons. RSW airport is only 30-45 minutes away, and has all the major airlines, plus low-cost carriers, too. You'll want a car.
Libby's Hot Tips: Foodies will want to stop at The Sandy Butler, on San Carlos Blvd, before driving over the bridge to the beach. (And yes, there are groceries on FMB). Rainy days are good for Beach Bowl or Fort Myers Beach Theater (which serves food during the movie!). There are also 2 great mini-golf courses nearby. Sanibel Island (see my review) is known around the world for its seashells. It's only 20-30 minutes by car.
The Bottom Line: Libby Loves It!
