I love the 96 T-Bird too. Nothing beats a V-8 and the 4.8L does have impressive performance off the show-room floor. I have a anniversary edition with the sport kit. Although I have had expensive problems with the air intake manifold springing leaks. I have had three replaced since I purchased the car in 96, The latest ones are now made with metal inserts to reinforce the coolent ports. I am hoping that this does the trick. The body is durable. It does not rust like many other vehicles tend to do. The front-end steering and suspension does need a lot of attention. I have replaced almost every part up front. The brakes are also under-engineered for the car despite the beefier brake pads you get with the sport kit. They wear out more frequently than on other cars I have owned. It is money well spent if you get after-market calpers, rotors, and brake-shoes. Ford just does not have adequetly engineered brake components, At least not for the T-Bird.
