I rented a 2007 Ford Focus on a recent trip to Las Vegas and had the car for a week. It's a pretty good car and it would work well for a small family. I had a four-door version, which made it easy when some of my co-workers piled in for a ride back to the hotel. Even with a full load (and these were solidly built co-workers, if you know what I mean), the Focus still had the oomph to merge easily on the highway. Everyone had enough room for their knees and toes.
However, the car was even nicer when I was alone. It was quite peppy and sporty, and almost begged to be driven a little faster than you should go on city streets. It's quiet enough to easily hear the decent-sounding stereo, and the A/C worked fine in the hot desert sun. All the controls were easy to reach and it was nice to have features like power windows and locks, and a keyless entry system. In particular, I enjoyed opening the trunk without fiddling with a key.
The car automatically locks its doors when you start moving, which is annoying if you want to let a passenger out at the curb. I got honked at by a impatient driver when a friend couldn't immediately figure out how to open the locked door.
I drove the car for only about 100 miles over the course of a week and all the driving was on busy Las Vegas streets. I got 27 miles per gallon for gas mileage, which I thought was pretty good under the circumstances. For one thing, I don't know how well the car was filled when I picked it up from the rental agency.
I recommend the 2007 Ford Focus for small families, particularly in four-door form. It is a fun-to-drive and efficient vehicle.
