The works of Luciano Ercoli (Death Walks in High Heels) have been rediscovered by fans of European cinema of late, and this 1970 psychological thriller (marking the point at which he switched from producing to directing) is a fine representation of his taste and visual flair. He’s not the innovator that Dario Argento is, but he has a sense of style.
The emphasis in this story by the prolific Ernesto Gastaldi is more on drama, with Dagmar Lassander (Legend of the Wolf Woman) underplaying her torment as the woman caught in the web of blackmailer Simon Andreu (Blood Spattered Bride), then building nicely throughout on the mood of paranoia. Nieves Navarro (better known in the USA as Susan Scott) adds spice as the sexy best friend, but Pier Paolo Capponi (Seven Blood Stained Orchids) is so bland as the husband that he’s all too obviously meant to draw suspicion.
Ennio Morricone contributes another good score, both contemporary and offbeat.
