My mother never used anything when she cooked... which I think is a big part of why I incorporate so many of them now into the meals that I prepare.

What are your top 5 spices besides salt and pepper?

Garlic powder, Minced onion, Oregano, Cavenders (a Greek seasoning) and Lawry's Seasoning. I have many more, but I guess those would be my top 5. Very good question!!

Nice thread, and topic!

1) Garlic powder

2) Parsley

3) Oregano

4) Basil

5) Curry

This, I have found to be a great combo of spices that work well as a whole. Theres always a need somewhere for them with me.

My top 5 are:

--oregano flakes

--minced garlic

--Herbs de Provence

--red pepper flakes

--rosemary

I use many more spices than those, but those are the ones that I use most often in my cooking and would be at a loss without.

I'm not one for a lot of seasoning or spice in food so therefore, I don't cook with much.  Pepper has been blackballed on this thread but that is something I use with almost everything I eat that is part of a meal.  However, my other top five would be:

  1. Worcestershire sauce
  2. Nature's Seasoning
  3. Domino's Sugar 'N Cinnamon for toast and carrots
  4. Old Bay Seasoning--I don't use table salt so generally this is my substitute
  5. Garlic powder

And since Bkovacs didn't really use all five of his allotment I will add Cavendar's Greek Seasoning to my list :+)

There are spices outside of salt and pepper???

In our cupboard we always have
1. Cinammon... I could not live without this
2. Lawery's salt... burgers are not complete without it.
3. Garlic Salt... we make our own garlic bread
4. Lemon Pepper

Those are the ones I use the most anyway.

What about cinnamon?  :+)  It seems as if everyone is putting cinnamon.  Maybe it could be this time of year.  I have a bottle of crushed red pepper flakes that hasn't been used in years.  My Dad gave it to me so that I could be prepared whenever I had him and my mother over for dinner :+)

Only five, wow, that's toughie......

1) Garlic any way I can get it, use Lawry's Garlic Salt almost everyday

2) Paprika, gives everything a nice smoky flavor

3) Cayenne pepper or Red Pepper flakes, turns on a little heat

4) Herb-Ox sodium free bouillon's, taste just as good as all the others and no SALT

5)McCormick's Far East Sesame Ginger Blend, for that oriental-type dish

I always have dried mushrooms on hand, rehydrated and strained, they add a nice touch to just about any meal, dried onion flakes & a large bottle of EVO, and I am ready to cook up sumtin yummy

I love love love spicing it up.

I use a lot of:

basil  (well, I guess that's actually an herb, but I'm adding it here)

cinnamon

lemon pepper

Tones seafood and salmon seasoning (I should do a review on that - it's great)

balsamic vinegar (yeah, I know, not a spice, but I use a lot of it)

Rosemary (I have several growing outside - yum - yep, not a spice...)

Nutmeg

Crushed, red pepper

oh gosh - I could go on and on.
