Every town seems to have one - that neat local restaurant that most folks don't know about unless they live in the area.

Name your (or the) town. Name your secret restaurant find. And, why is it so terrific?

In Vancouver's South East quadrant is a little place in a strip mall. It is not even well known by the locals. It is Philly Bilmo's, not a chain, just the one restaurant. They have the best Philly Cheesesteaks there I have ever eaten, including in South Philly. They also have several other subs, a couple of salads, and some good chili/cheese fries. The subs are made to order and you can eat in or carry out. The prices are reasonable and the ingredients the freshest and best the owner and cook can find. I usually get a half Bilmo, eight inches, and Johnny and Honey like the Traditional Philly wiith Mayo. It is at least a two napkin sandwich.

I hope it never gets too popular. There is already a significant wait during weekday lunch hours.

Tks eps!

Salisbury, NC

Haps

It's a hot dog place on Main Street. Hard to find and see. You may see the line out the door though. If not, just ask. Everyone knows Haps.

The chili is what makes these hot dogs the max. I have tried to make it, but I've not got it figured out. Just really great chili.

In addition to the hot dogs, they have great Southern hamburgers with the chili on them. Folks in the South like chili on burgers.

Best hot dogs I've had anywhere.

Hours of operation are limited. So check ahead. They sell so many that they don't have to stay open many hours.

I know I've been gone from Statesville for a long time, but whatever happened to hamburgers with cole slaw and a side of hushpuppies as the favorite?

Yeah. That too. Cole slaw AND chili. Hush puppies as well. Haps doesn't do the hush puppies. Don't think they have slaw. For that style in Salisbury, College Barbecue on Statesville Blvd or Hendricks BBQ on the same road or on Innes.

For Ocean County, NJ area it would be the Downtown Dinner Club in downtown Toms River.... delicious, gourmet meals for $25 or less.

I have two of them, both in Wichita where I grew up.

 1) Fortune Cookie - awesome little Chinese place that has $8 buffets with an unlimited number of crab legs. We've been going there since 1984.

 2) Cholitas-best salsa EVER. My parents have gone there since 1980.

Up in a little town calle Arcadia, MI there is a little diner that I believe is called the Northwood Cafe.  Whenever we go up north we always have to find time to go there as they have some of the best homestyle food ever.

As for here in my hometown, there are mostly chain places.  There used to be a cute little place that had wonderful food but these ones don't seem to last very long here.

Whenever we are going south on I-81 we try to work out meal timing so that we eat at Mamasita's Mexican Food in Lenox, Pennsylvania.  It is right off the interstate.

Everything about it is great!  The food is authentic, priced right and the atmosphere is casual Mexico.  Every time we stop they have added to the ever growing knic-knac display.  Once we stopped around Christmas and they had a huge tree up loaded with homemade ornaments and Mexican flair.

Even the service is authentically Mexican-  don't stop if you are in a hurry. ;-)

Our favorite place is called Allen's Clam Bar in New Gretna, New Jersey.  This is a sleepy little town; if you blink, you drive right through it.  They have the best seafood.  They make the most delicious jumbo lump crab cakes and a "Fried Lobster tail", which is to die for!  It's a great little local place.

There isn't really anyplace here that I would miss if it were gone but I do like a certain Mr. Pita restaurant a lot.

What I really miss is a chocolate Whoopie Pie from the Landing Store in Kennbunk, Maine.  I used to live there and that was almost a daily habit.  I've thought about ordering some online but my husband would kill me if I spent a small fortune on pies.  LOL

The Carriage House in Winston-Salem, NC

Great restaurant on Stratford Rd. They have awesome food--everything from spaghetti and meatballs to steaks still sizzling when they bring them to the table. They have crackers and soft cheese to munch on and they used to bring out a vegetable tray to munch on as well while waiting for the entree. We haven't been out to eat in years because of all the food sensitivities at out house, but when we did go there, I think we saw the owner every time. He seemed very conscientious and his staff was always professional and there to serve. If you're ever in Winston-Salem, I would HIGHLY recommend this restaurant. It's very close to Hanes Mall and many other Winston-Salem attractions.

We have a restaurant called "The Little Hawaiian". They have the best seafood. The couple that runs it are from Hawaii. It is not a chain restaurant, but they are thinking of opening some more locations in west Georgia. The restaurant decor consist of beautiful paintings and statues.

Here in Columbus, we have a place on the far west-side of town called George's. Their specialty is Coney hot-dogs. The best you could eat. Their secret is in the way they prepare the onions, and the sauce of course. Damn, I knew this was going to happen! I'm getting a craving for em! LOL! If gas was not so damn expensive I would take a 40 mile round trip for them.

The Glenview on Princeton Street in No. Chelmsford if you have a huge appetite or can split an entre with your date. Try the Steak a la Mafia. Saltonbuco is passable but not as tender as Chateau's in Andover. Good luck getting in, no reservations for less than a party of six and the wait can be half an hour.  New pizza place in Tyngsboro, Angela's Pizza has coal fired 900 degree ovens and is where Matthews strip club used to be. The white pizza and chicken parm pizza were both super, better than Bertucci's. By far the best meal in recent memory was at Feng Shui in Chelmsford, near Cross Point. The japanese hibachi upstairs is to die for and the chinese food downstairs or for take-out is excellent.

If you ever come to Jackson, MS we have a little place call the Cock of The Walk on the Reservoir. It is a place for the best fish, greens and coleslaw, I think in the South. It is a family restaurant with the country western scenery. You eat out of tin plates, drink out of tin cups and they even flip your delicious corn bread that have corn baked into it. It is to die for. So if you ever in Jackson, MS or surrounding area please visit this place. Good Eaten!!!!!
