I remember how fun it was to come home after trick or treating and checking out the bounty. We didn't get a lot of candy at home, so it was fabulous to have a whole bag of sweets.

There were some ick items though.

Of course, with four kids, someone usually liked the other person's ick candy.

I was the Dot girl. Those are sticky little lumps of fruit flavored candy. You chew and chew. They stick to your braces and fillings. Yum. I don't know why, but I loved those.

The candies I didn't like were those hunks of brown stuff wrapped in bright orange and black papers with no name on them. The Good and Plenty candies also were awful, but my brother liked them. Pixie Sticks. Now what is that stuff? Kool Aid powder? They always broke and powdered everything in the bag. There were also a couple of folks who cleaned out their cabinets and gave away very strange things like packs of instant oatmeal. Scratching head on that one as a kid.

I got foil wrapped popcorn, individual! Yes let me rephrase here, tiny pieces of wrapped popcorn......old woman up the street....don't think her mind worked properly.

From mean or idiotic neighbors?  Hall's Cough Drops.  Good thing my mom insisted on checking my trick-or-treat bag before I ate anything.

Candy I didn't like/still don't like? Licorice Twizzlers or anything with licorice.

pennies! hated the pennies! Once our neighbors ran out of candy and they gave us a couple dollars. :)

I agree with jazyjen. People who pass out pennies really irritated me as a child. Why not take those pennies and go buy candy? Some people I will never understand :)

The people I'll never figure out are the sickos who put (or used to put) razor blades in apples then put said apples into kids' trick-or-treat bags.  At least, that was one of the things we kids were told in the mid- to late 1970s when our teachers told us to let our parents check our candy before we ate anything from our bags.

I remember checking my kid's bags when they were little to be sure nothing was tampered with. People were putting pins in candy, razor blades in apples, and even drugs in stuff. What the heck? I wouldn't let them go anywhere that we didn't know the people and I tossed anything that looked remotely suspicious. I don't think anyone ever tampered with the candy around here but it was scary knowing that it happened elsewhere. People are crazy! That was around the same time Tylenol was tampered with at stores (I think it was Tylenol) and people were dying. I STILL won't buy capsules!

Yes, it was in Chicago that the Tylenol poisoning took place, too.  I was still in high school at the time (1982) and it sure was pretty scary.

Our local hospitals will allow parents to bring the children's bags in and run them thru the x-rays to see if there are any razor blades.  It will prevent some mishaps.

Our malls also do trick-or-treating to keep the kids off the streets.  You go to the mall dressed up and visit each store and they pass out candy.  A few years ago I was also in costume and I got a bag filled with candy just for escorting the children.

Many of our local churches also do fall festivals in place of Halloween activities and this provides for a safe environment and worry free "trick or treating."

I tried a new candy at the fair this year, caramel apple dots.  I didn't like them so I would die if anyone tried to offer them to me.

Another thing I didn't like growing up were those popcorn balls.

I didn't go out, but my Grandkids got old Valentine's candy.  The chocolate had turned colors.  My daughter said they got it from an older gentleman so she didn't want to hurt his feelings.
