I remember how fun it was to come home after trick or treating and checking out the bounty. We didn't get a lot of candy at home, so it was fabulous to have a whole bag of sweets.

There were some ick items though.

Of course, with four kids, someone usually liked the other person's ick candy.

I was the Dot girl. Those are sticky little lumps of fruit flavored candy. You chew and chew. They stick to your braces and fillings. Yum. I don't know why, but I loved those.

The candies I didn't like were those hunks of brown stuff wrapped in bright orange and black papers with no name on them. The Good and Plenty candies also were awful, but my brother liked them. Pixie Sticks. Now what is that stuff? Kool Aid powder? They always broke and powdered everything in the bag. There were also a couple of folks who cleaned out their cabinets and gave away very strange things like packs of instant oatmeal. Scratching head on that one as a kid.

The orange and black wrapped candies were molasses taffy.

The most horrible things I ever got in my Trick or Treat bags were already chewed, half eaten or bitten into candies and an apple that had been tampered with. Good thing mom checked our bags with us before we could eat anything.

I got a rubber glove filled with carmel popcorn once. The idea was cute, but the lady must have used the gloves with powder in them. When we told our Mom the popcorn tasted funny, she just tasted it and told us to throw it out.

I'm with CyndiA, the first time I ever got those chewy candies in orange and black wrappers I felt like Charlie Brown getting another rock.  I don't know if it's because I just didn't like them or that the wrappers really bothered me.  After I realized how much I hated them I would cry each time I would find them in my bag.  It became such an ordeal that my mother who accompanied us would have to send my brother's ahead of me to check out the stash.  I still cringe to this day when I see those things.

I also couldn't stand the Bit-O-Honey, any licorice, or any gumdrop/chewy style candy.

My brother probably got the most unusual in our family.  Daddy always stayed home and passed out candy while mom was with us.  Well, we went to some friend's door (they owned a bar).  The man said he was giving my brother a treat to give to my Dad.  When we got home Jimmy had a can of Pabst Blue Ribbon beer in his bag :+%  That must have been for Daddy ;+)After trick-or-treating we would dump our bags out and the fun was sorting everything by category.  Daddy would always try to nab our Snickers.  I would give up anything but B-B-Bats and bubble gum.  Of course, I would share the gum with my mother.

We had one little old lady that everyone wanted to go to because she would always give us each a quarter, no candy.  Candy bars were usually 4/$1 so we could buy one :+)

I hated those coupons for a free small french fry or whatever at a fast food place. I NEVER used them. I once got ribbon candy which I hate already but it was stale and I think from the Christmas past. It was disgusting. And one house gave out one penny per kid. I don't know why but I just didn't like getting one penny. Now, I'd go back 300 times. lol.

I can't remember getting anything really weird. I guess I liked to eat about everything or traded with my siblings. I remember my mom talked about giving one neighbor boy a cold, left-over baked potato after we ran out of candy. She said he looked so terribly sad when she told him we had just run out that she felt like she just had to give him something!

You need to post this on the other discussion board about the laughing so hard you bust a gut...this is too funny.  I would have been glad to get a baked potato :+)  Take it home, nook it in the microwave and add some butter and sour cream :+)  Well, nix that thought--my parents didn't get their first microwave until I was in college and then mom only used it to hide her cookies in.

I never liked the chewy candies in orange and black wrappers either. I also did not like corn candy. I seemed to get these in my bag each year. I do remember getting money one year from some neighbor. It was a silver dollar. I still have it.

I didn't like finding Tootsie Rolls in my trick or treat bag as a kid. . . Funny thing though, I enjoy them now.

Tootsie Rolls was the first candy I would eat from my trick-or-treat bag. I still love them today.

What was really bad was if the candy corn wasn't packaged. Just loose candy corns dropped in the trick or treat bag. Not good.

My hometown does trick-or-treating at the mall.  Some the stores will give you samples, coupons, etc.  One year I got a pair of socks from Limited Too, a perfume sample from Dillards, game token from an arcade, and a tube of wrapping paper from the Customer Service Desk in the mall.

I remember there was an old man that would pass out quarters, then when he ran out he would pass out a couple dimes, and by the time I made it to his house I would get pennys! And they were dirty pennys too!

The worst thing was at this one house where the kids didn't get anything in their bags (or plastic pumpkin heads). When the door was answered and we said, trick-or-treat, the lady didn't give us a treat and insisted that we do a trick. We were too young to realize that she should have been doing a trick for us.... LOL, I guess that is in fact what she did... hmm,  tricky, very very tricky ;-}

You mentioned "those hunks of brown stuff wrapped in bright orange and black papers with no name on them."  I used to LOVE those things which -- unless I'm mistaken -- are molasses taffy kisses loaded with peanut butter.  I was pretty easy to please when it came to goodies but two things used to leave me unmoved --- every now and then some optimist would give us shiny red apples (which we could have gotten ANY day of the week -- YAWN!) and sometimes a kind neighbor would work very hard to make us donuts!  The donuts would have been great for anything other than T or T!  As it was, the minute they were dropped into our goodie bags, they began to fall apart and we would end up getting home with a bunch of candy drowning in a sea of greasy (albeit delicious) crumbs.  After I grew up, they began to warn well-meaning people not to hand out stuff that was unwrapped so I guess kids today don't have to cope with crumbs or nutritious fruit!

I hated getting "Pecans". There was always some old widow woman who would throw a couple of them in everyone's bags.

I look back on it now and think that's probably all she could afford to give out. Pecans are like gold around here now, people don't give them away. The prices are outrageous. I'm just glad we've got a couple of trees on our property so we don't have to buy any.

My kids would LOVE to get a rock for Halloween. I don't know what it is. Rocks and sticks. The kids may be in an awesome playground and there they are in a corner, playing in the dirt with rocks and sticks. One year, I asked the girls if they wanted to get sticks in their stockings for Christmas. The 2nd one started jumping up and down and saying "Yea--I want sticks!"

I don't deprive my children. Honest.

I never liked the candy apples - the kind with the red coating. Does anyone even make them anymore?  The red candy was hard to bite through and the apple underneath was always mushy, Blah.

We had one house we went to where they made us come in and made us sing before we could get anything. We had to sing some stupid song and then we got a box of Milk Duds. Not a real box. One that only held TWO Milk Duds.

And yet we went back every year. I think we secretly liked singing. lol.. Now, I wouldn't let a kid of mine into someone's house for any reason. Another house we went to had a haunted house inside. It was all made up and dark and we went through all the rooms. Very cool. Those people REALLY got into Halloween. They gave us the red yucky candy apples but it was the house we went for.

Yes!  The adults get treats if they are in costume.  That way the merchants can know the shoppers from the festive people. The mall is in an area that has a lot of housing developments within walking distance of it so many do the mall instead of house-to-house.  The first year I did it I was taking my two younger nephews who are now teenagers.  I called custmoer service to find out the times and other information.  We have been doing it since.  The kids like it because after trick-or-treating they know they will get to eat dinner in the food court.  It's fun, it's safe and it seems that everyone has a good time.  Sometimes the children I am with will do some fast trick-or-treating at home before heading to the mall.  The adults come in to flaunt their costumes and perhaps get some stuff done with the children before they themselves head out to a party.

They still sell them at our state fair each year.  They also sell the caramel and the caramel wrapped in nuts.  I don't like any of that stuff--blah!!

We had the haunted house in our neighborhood too.  I was too afraid to even approach the door because of the erie music so my brother's would take the grand tour and somehow manage to get me a piece of candy.  Looking back, maybe they were actually being nice and just pulled a piece of candy out of their bag for me.

A few years ago I took my nephews t-o-t before going to the mall.  Marcus was about 4 or 5 and saw a big screen TV playing The Great Pumpkin Charlie Brown.  The next thing we knew he was in the people's house (strangers to us) and sitting with the man of the house watching tv and eating Coke.   The people thought it was funny and asked if they could get a picture of him because their family would never believe it otherwise.  So, now we have a picture of Marcus sitting on the floor beside the man's recliner with his bag of candy, a can of Coke and a grin on his face that must have meant he was supposed to be there.

Were they real sodas or the generic softdrinks?  I can't imagine carrying a bag all night with a 12 oz. can in it.  I could barely tote my bag of goodies at the end of the night!
