Maybe you knew. Maybe you didn't beforehand. But, you've probably eaten something that still makes you shudder or smile.

What's the oddest thing you ever ate?

What did you think of it after?

Sea Urchin.  The first time I'd ever gone out for sushi, a friend I was with told me, "try this one first."  After I choked it down, he said "now you'll have no problem eating anything else here."  And he was right. Raw fish was not a problem after that, but I don't think I'll ever ask for sea urchin, ever!

Let's see.  When I was a kid, I ate fried grasshoppers (pretty crunchy) and chocolate covered ants (tastes like raisinettes).

As an adult while in China I had Monkey Brains (I couldn't insult my host).  An experience I'd like to forget.

All of these have reminded me of that show where Andrew Zimmerman eats gross food.  Ugh!!!!

You never told us what YOU ate CyndiA.  I always eat chittlins, hog maws and tripe.  I love them.  For those who don't know what they are they are respectively pork intestines, pork stomachs, and cow stomach linings.

When I was a kid my dad kept the fridge stocked with jarred octopus. I developed quite a taste for it, tentacles and all.

I also used to eat seaweed, I think it was pickled. Courtesy of a friend I had who was from Japan. I liked it too and miss it.

In Laredo I ate cow's heart and it was okay but was greasy. Also barbacoa (cow's face) breakfast tacos. Weird maybe but great.

Being from Texas, eating venison is hardly weird though I saw someone mentioning it. Few things beat a good venison sausage.

I've been tempted to try a snake since I live in a snake pit but so far haven't been up to removing the skin. Maybe next year.

As a general rule, I don't eat anything weird.  I'm fairly picky.  But when I was a kid I used to eat liver sausage like it was a cookie.  Literally.  My dad would slice me off a round piece of it and I'd walk around eating it like a cookie.  I remember absolutely loving it.  At some point he stopped buying it and I forgot about it.  But to think of it now it makes me ill.  Yick.  I can't even stand the thought of regular, normal sausage.

Anyone ever had VEGIMITE?!? It is like a spread that you put on crackers from Australia. I had it in my 5th grade class and threw up all over my desk. It it sooo nasty, I still taste it to this day and that was 12 years ago! My teacher lied and said it was delicious like peanut butter. EHH, WRONG! It is black and tastes like crap!

I have had Rocky Mountain Oysters, which are deep-fried bull testicles. Sorry, guys but the are actually tasty, but I don't eat things fried in grease anymore.

I had some Grass Jelly Drink once. It''s Asian, and it's slimy and nasty.

If you are in Pennsylvania Dutch country, I would advise thee to steer clear of the scrapple.

This isn't so much shocking as it is surprising.  I just had the opportunity to try Cheese loaf.  It is a type of lunchmeat that has bits of cheese, peppers and actual elbow macaroni.  It looks a mess, but doesn't taste bad.  Not something I'd eat eveyrday, but I liked it.

I'm not squeamish and would probably try most things once. But I still laugh at my first (and only) baby squid sushi. It wasn't cut up pieces of the meat, as I expected. It was a miniature octopus-looking thing with the head sticking out the end of the sushi roll. I tried to bite the head off with a little bit of the roll, but it was too tough to get my teeth through. I pulled the whole squid out - head in my mouth, legs dangling out of my mouth. Wish I'd had a picture of that!

Although not shocking, the most unconventional thing I have eaten (that I know of) was alligator in New Orleans.  I tried it fried and sauteed and I didn't like it either way.  It wasn't the way it tasted, it was the texture.  It was way too spongy.  Octopus isn't bad if you don't get a hunk of it.  I had it in ceviche in very small pieces and it wasn't nearly as bad as I thought it was going to be, but it was chewy!

Several Years ago when I was visiting my mom in florida (I was living in NY at the time now I live in florida) we were going to a favorite seafood restaurant of both of us. I usually got lobster tail but she asked that I try something different for a change. So I did. They had a special of Gator Tail Parmesian and I ordered it. Was very delicious. Different, not too wierd.

It wasn't shocking just interesting.  Saturday I went to a mission's conference and one of the missionaries was from Brazil and had several authentic dishes available for the teens to sample.

I tried Pao de Queijo (cheese bread)

Chicken Empada--resembled a chicken potpie but a little zestier.

Mortadella Sandwich--The sandwich is made from nearly a half of a pound of mortadella sausage, provolone cheese, sourdough bread, mayonnaise and dijon mustard.

The sandwich immediately made me think of This2ShallPass19 because she loves food and she enjoys making really good sandwiches.

Gigi, you are correct, that sandwich sounds delicious!  Did you get to try it?  The cheese bread sounds good too!  I do love chicken empanadas, but they tend to be greasy, so I don't eat them very often.  You know me and my sandwiches :)

There was a slew of ethnic dishes and I did try all 3 that I listed above.  But note the word "try."  I knew not to eat too much of that sandwich because I can't have beef or pork and I don't like sausage unless it's smoked.  I just sampled it because the girls wanted me to.  It was a little zesty but the way it was prepared it looked wonderful.  I loved the cheese bread but it did have a slightly different taste so you know me; I didn't even want to think about WHAT kind of cheese was used.  We also tried some sort of soup that looked like it had hard boiled eggs floating on it.  I can't remember the name but I do remember I didn't like that!!

The worst thing I ever knowingly ate was pickled octopus.  I hated it...it was cold and rubbery and gritty; I could barely choke it down.

The worst thing I ever passed on was when I was on a friend's ranch in Mexico -they served "mountain oysters" (bull testicles).
