I always get excited when when the days get cooler and the holidays are coming. There are so many great dishes that we usually just have around the holidays. A couple that come to mind are Chex Party Mix and Bisquick Sausage Balls.

What are you special holiday foods or dishes?

Growing up in the Dutch culture, on December 5th, we put our shoes out and "St. Nicholas" (a.k.a. my mother) puts a special treat in for the morning...wouldn't be the holidays without our chocolate letters...everyone gets their initial in a large chocolate block letter.  Delish!

Anybody ever had a deep-fried turkey? How was it? I want to try some!

I have never had deep-fried turkey, but I hear once you do, that's the only way to eat it.

For Thanksgiving I don't think I could do it, because I love turkey, still stuff the bird, just gets that flavor from the turkey. YUM!  Mashed potato's, Candied yams or sweet potato's with marshmallows on top sprinkled with pecans, yellow corn, homemade gravy, croissant's, and good ol' homemade pumpkin pie with whipped cream, takes time to make all the food and then in 15-20 minutes everyone is stuffed like the turkey was...lol... And sometimes we also have have ham, same goes for Christmas.

New Year's eve, I like to make a lot of appetizer's, little hot dogs some cooked in sweet & sour sauce, some in like a bar-b-que sauce. Stuffed mushrooms with lobster, shrimp, mozzarella cheese, Italian seasoning, garlic & onion powder, and drizzle some butter on top just til browned. These are sooo good, and do not last long.

I'm starting to warm up the palate for the Holidays already, just about time to start baking some cookies. :~)

My homemade sausage stuffing.  It's the best and I have to make it every year :)

It wouldn't be Thanksgiving without black walnut and pecan topped sweet potato caserole, if I didn't make it my family would divorce me lol.  And of course we cannot forget roast turkey and gravy  yum !

From the last Thursday of every November until January 3, you are allowed to splurge and anyone on a diet during this time needs to be kicked. lol

I love eggnog.  And my favorite dish to make is cheese cake.  I use the recipe that is on the Philly cream cheese box.

I make a mean roasted garlic mashed potatoes recipe, although other people prefer my candied sweet potatoes or my cream of carrot soup.

I have to add baked macaroni and cheese.  I make it for the holidays as well as BLT pasta salad.

Food is secondary to the gathering of family and friends.  Since my immediate family is all gone, I have found a family in my daughter-in-law's family.  It's amazing the foods that I have learned to LOVE that I would have never tried before.  I'm white and my son's inlaws are black, so there is always a house full of people and such a variety of food that it's something I wait all year looking forward to.  Thanksgiving and Christmas!!  It's hard to pull me out of the kitchen while my son's "other mother" is finishing up with the greens.  It's become a joke that if you want greens, you'd better get there early, or Cindy will have eaten them all before the meal.  I've been known to scarf down three cereal bowls full of greens just standing in the kitchen and talking.  EVERYTHING is made from scratch and my hands are living proof.  I usually go over the day before and help prep for the meal.  Peeling and dicing sweet potatoes will put a hurting on your fingers!!  They're tough as heck when raw.  I did learn though that if you let them soak in water, it causes them to soften a bit.  My body can only handle two days of that kind of eating though, because it is so rich, calorie and fat laden that I would die if I did it on a regular basis.  But it's worth it!

Yes, tried my first one in 1996 and won't eat one cooked any other way now.  So moist inside since the deep frying seals in the flavor and juices.

My mom's homemade bread. My mom makes the best bread. I can smell it now as I write this. I can't make what she makes but I come close.

Happy Thanksgiving, the day after all! We all stuffed our faces, and of course the turkey knocked me out early. Long day in the kitchen. Made two pumpkin pies, YUM, YUM! Everything turned out very, very tasty. As usual, my hubby had two plates of food which he know he pays for being uncomfortable after wards, I guess that's why the big dishes and all got washed right after so we wouldn't feel so guilty. lol...I Hope you and yours had a Very nice thanksgiving, I know I have alot to be Thankful for!

And this2shallpass19, I'd also like to know what you put in your sausage stuffing, I make one also, always looking for good recipes.

Hi RudiXeno and darlyn63!  I don't have an exact recipe I follow, I just kind of know when it looks right, but this is how I make my Sausage Stuffing.

You'll need:

2 loaves of bread, tube of Jimmy Dean's sausage, chopped onion, minced garlic, chopped celery, chicken broth, poultry seasoning, ground sage, garlic salt, black pepper and butter.

1. Tear your bread into medium-sized pieces and leave in a large bowl uncovered.  Saute your veggies in butter until soft.  I use a lot of butter because that will later help the bread get a good "crust" from the oven.

2. Brown the sausage in a pan and crumble into small pieces, drain grease. 

3. Add your softened veggies (with butter from pan) and crumbled sausage to your bowl with torn bread.  Sprinkle poultry seasoning, pepper, garlic salt and ground sage over everything.  Mix it all up and sprinkle some more seasonings.  This dish really works well with lots of dried sage and poultry seasoning!

4. A little bit at a time, pour chicken broth to the mix and stir it around.  Once you get the texture you like, pour the stuffing in a greased casserole dish and bake.

It's done when you get a nice crispy crust on top, but the stuffing underneath is still moist.  Hopefully I didn't leave anything out, I just eye ball it :)  Enjoy!

Your recipe sounds absolutely delish !  I'm definitely trying it soon.

For Christmas Eve dinner my mom always made baked stuffed lobster for everyone and now my sisters and I will keep the tradition going along with many other goodies we learned how to prepare from her.
