I always get excited when when the days get cooler and the holidays are coming. There are so many great dishes that we usually just have around the holidays. A couple that come to mind are Chex Party Mix and Bisquick Sausage Balls.

What are you special holiday foods or dishes?

Oh I love the Christmas designs from baggies to cookies. :D

For the holidays, I love my mom's tamales. I also love the "Lofthouse" soft frosted cookies. For Halloween they add orange frosting and orange and brown sprinkles. For thanksgiving, I don't remember. For Christmas, they put either red frosting or green with white, red and green sprinkles. :P

Oh, for me, it's not a Thanksgiving meal without crescent rolls, Pillsbury, preferably!

It wouldn't be Thanksgiving without one portion of the turkey burning - or my dad getting mad that one of my sisters burps at the table. :)

It wouldn't be Christmas w/out a breakfast that includes lots and lots of grilled bacon.

One year when I was in high school my mother was hospitalized and my Daddy had to cook the Thanksgiving meal.  We smelled something burning and Daddy opened the oven door and it was the turkey--burnt to a pulp!  He didn't know that you were supposed to have some liquid to baste it.  He stuffed it with Stove Top, put it in the oven and "thought" it would be ready in a few hours.  That was all fine and dandy with me because I don't like turkey ;+)

I love bacon!!

Glad to see a fresh voice at this board.  ~Gigi

I keep forgetting to pick up some sliced almonds at a natural food store for green bean almondine. Still deciding if I'll make a cake and what kind.   : )

Ooo! I hope you don't mind my using that idea! That sounds tasty. I sure much healthier than putting those French Onions on top!

Pecan pie. And nothing goes better with pecan pie than a good nut brown ale or sweet stout.

I usually take advantage of the Thanksgiving and Christmas holidays to find some new beer to sample- not that I need a holiday to induce me to try new beer, but I will accept any excuse I can find.

For me and my hubby, it is pumpkin pie with plenty of cool whip.  We usually spend Thanksgiving and Christmas just the 2 of us quietly.  One mainstay for both holidays is our pumpkin pie.  I have a great recipe which I have made in the past, but lately we have been doing our pumpkin pie the easy way - Mrs. Smith's frozen pumpkin pie.  Really good!  Just about as good as mine, and much simpler.

For me and my brothers and sister it wouldn't be the holidays without  old fashion cornbread stuffing like our mom always made

It is definitely healthier. You could even try making a healthier version of the green bean casserole. Use low or no salt cream of mushroom soup or the organic kind in a container and use fresh onion or dried minced. They're different but tasty.

Pumpkin Pie is one of the few things I love to bake from scratch, but I have to agree with you.  Mrs. Smith's pies are superb!

My mother always made date pinwheel cookies and peanut butter fudge for Christmas. I never make them because they just won't taste the same.

Thanksgiving: turkey, dressing, cranberry sauce, candied sweet potatoes, greens (my DIL makes them so delicious), and pumpkin pie.

Christmas: prime rib, baked potatoes, greens, and some sort of chocolate dessert.

I know there are others but this is all I can think right now.

You simply can't do without the Turkey and on Christmas I always look forward to a nice spiral ham.

No matter if we are having turkey or ham we have to have Sweet Potato Casserole loaded with pecans and marshmallow topping.

You will know it is getting close to Christmas because I will be busy making peppermint bark, toffee, peanut-butter fudge and glazed nuts.  [apply directly to the hips]

Meri, I was hoping for your address, I'm stopping by close to Christmas for some goodies... lol. Geez, you have me wanting to go home and bake and that's a rare occassion!! lol.. The hips thing, hilarious.

No holiday is ever complete without some slow cooked greens and cornbread.. OoOh, goodness. Also, I need my very tart lemon meriengue pie (SP?).

I started brining and grilling the turkey about three years ago and now my family always wants that for the holidays.
