I always get excited when when the days get cooler and the holidays are coming. There are so many great dishes that we usually just have around the holidays. A couple that come to mind are Chex Party Mix and Bisquick Sausage Balls.

What are you special holiday foods or dishes?

We always do a fish dinner on Christma Eve.  It's not a traditional italian eve dinner, but it's our version of one.  There is also a cake my husband buys, it's a chocolate cake with raspberry filling and it's rolled into a log and covered in chocolate frosting...yummmmm! Oh wait...I can't forget about the turkey, cranberries, sweet potatoes and pumpkin pie....I can't wait for the holidays!!

Pecan pie would be #1 for me on Thanksgiving and Christmas.

We have turkey, dressing, mac and cheese, watergate salad (some people call it pistachio salad), carrot casserole, green bean casserole, and chocolate delight pie on Thanksgiving.

Now for Christmas we have ham, potato salad, green bean casserole, mac and cheese, and broccoli salad. I usually bake chocolate chip cookies and carrot cake.

Grean Bean Casserole

It is a must have at any holiday dinner (at least for me).

Tks for checking in guys. I am really enjoying seeing the variety from across the country (and perhaps across the globe too - later).

I really enjoy traditional Thanksgiving foods, such as roast turkey, mashed potatoes, gravy. The only other thing that strikes me as a "fall" food is hot apple cider with a cinnamon stick. Mmmm... really enjoy that in season, especially if it's a cool day.

No matter if we are having turkey or ham we have to have Sweet Potato Casserole loaded with pecans and marshmallow topping.

You will know it is getting close to Christmas because I will be busy making peppermint bark, toffee, peanut-butter fudge and glazed nuts.  [apply directly to the hips]

For Thanksgiving I like the traditional dinner - turkey, dressing, mashed potatoes, cranberry sause, yams, green beans, pumpkin pie. Then lay on the couch because you're too stuffed to move.

Halloween - pizza or Chinese food. Usually homemade.

Thanksgiving - turkey, stuffing, mashed potatoes, green bean almondine, sweet potatoes, brussel sprouts, salad, pumpkin pie and surprize desserts.

Christmas - turkey or ham, mashed potatoes, sweet potatoes, salad, green bean almondine, Christmas cookies, yule log cake and surprize goodies.

My family and friends all do the traditional foods.  After having anorexia for 20+ years I basically have an aversion to social gatherings that center around food.  I like the music and fellowship.  Give me a nice cold glass of sweet tea and I'm good to go.

My parents laugh because I can't stand most holiday foods: turkey, cranberry sauce, pies, egg nog, cornbread dressing, giblet gravy, apple cider, candied apples, oh and let's not forget fruitcake.  And the list goes on....

Here's my thoughts on fruitcake, courtesy of the VanTrapp Family children (second generation).  Please don't send me fruitcake.  Please don't take the time to bake a fruitcake.  It's your fruitcake that I fear.  Please don't send me fruitcake.  It just sits here on the plate so please don't send me fruitcake this year.

Okay, I do like ham, greenbean casserole, and I love hot chocolate ;+)

Ah yes! Fruitcake! The gift that keeps on being given.

It's a little known fact that there are only about 15 fruitcakes in existence and most of them have been circulating for nearly 2,000 years.

I don't like many of the traditional foods on Thanksgiving, especially that dreadful pumpkin pie (lol).  So my holiday favorites are the Christmas cookies!  My mom and I always make a huge batch of cookie-cutter butter cookies and then spend about five more hours frosting them.  It's a lot of work but it just wouldn't be Christmas without them.

One of my favorites growing up was Mom's homemade yeast rolls. I love turkey, mashed potatoes (now have a recipe that uses applesauce in place of butter and rice milk and it's pretty good), green beans, and I have a great recipe for pumpkin cheesecake (need to find some way to tweak that one to be gluten free)

One year while my brother and I were in college and living together we went to a Christmas gathering at some friends' home.  My brother took a fruitcake to give to the hostess.  He put his initials on the bottom and told his military buddies what he had done because the hostess was known for recycling gifts.  Well, low and behold at the Christmas ball the soldiers all exchanged gifts and guess what my brother got?  The very fruitcake that he had given a few weeks earlier.  You wouldn't believe it unless you saw his initials.  Neither of us would eat fruitcake so we took it home and gave it to my Daddy.  Yes, it's the gift that keeps on being given.  But please don't give any to me :+%

Red Velvet Cake: it's just not Christmas without it!!

Another favorite of mine and everyone else in my family is my homemade "Jack Daniels Sweet Tater Pie". It smells so good when it's baking in the oven, it makes the whole house smell wonderful. The alcohol bakes out, so you don't have to worry about getting drunk..LOL. It makes it taste OH SO GOOD!!

I just found out about 2 years ago that I actually like Red Velvet Cake.  I don't like cakes because I cannot stand frosting--too sweet.  Someone knew I liked cream cheese and got me to taste the RV cake and I was hooked.  No one in my family makes it so I have to get it at my best friend's during the holidays.  Oh, and I love peppermint sticks :+)

Whatever else I have -- whatever kind of meat, veggies, whatever -- nothing will work unless there is cranberry sauce (either jellied or "whole").  I can vouch for this because in 1959, about a week before Thanksgiving, some yahoo somewhere told everyone that cranberry sauce could give you cancer. Nobody would buy it for the holidays and we learned the hard way how important this "side dish" was!

When my mom and dad were alive, they would always have a chittlin cookout every year in November. Dad would boil them first and then put them in a big (I mean HUGE) black iron kettle outside and fry them. They were very good. I actually miss having them, but I'm not going to cook'em in my house b/c they smell horrible.

You just have to forget what they are while eating them!! LOL!!

I guess it wouldn't be the holidays without alcohol. :) With all the family gatherings, it does put some pressure on me. I tend to avoid all the crazy food, but Wine is mighty fine this time of the year. Cheers!

Buckeye Balls!

And turkey wouldn't be complete without the taste of whole cranberries n stuffing,  sweet taters crispy from brown sugar n butter, potato salad, chicken dumplings, mashed potatoes n gravy, lots of cookies, cake...and oh yeah, Pumkin pie!
Isn't it November yet?!?!

I think I'm spending T-Giving with you.  I like the sweet potatoes, potato salad, chicken & dumplings, and mashed potatoes and gravy.  A lot of starch and carbs but it sure does sound scrump-dili-ishous ;+)
