I've recently discovered a couple of surprisingly good wines with less than traditional labels -- an Italian wine with a Layer Cake label.  What's the funkiest, craziest label/vineyard that you've discovered with really good wine (no Marilyn Merlot just can't fit that category)?

I saw this wine from the Boone Vineyards in Boone, Iowa (This is not the Boone's wine we all remember swilling in college). It's called Cat Nip and has a dark purple and silver label with a sleek stylized cat on it. I wanted to send some to my parents since they love cats so much, but I guess it's illegal to mail alcohol. I don't know what it tastes like, but the bottle would be a converstion starter.

A couple weeks ago, I spent an afternoon in Frankenmuth, Michigan. In one tacky tourist trap shop there, they had a case with Elvis Presley collectables, including a couple bottles of Elvis wines. There was a Don't Be Cruel Chardonnay and Heartbreak Hotel Merlot. Really. I'm not kidding.

I love the label on "House Wine" from Walla Walla, Washington... Check out my review here, includes a label photo. The simple, black and white sketch of a house looks like a kindergartner made it! I like a good wine that doesn't take itself too seriously :)

You'll just have to wrap it up in lots of bubblewrap and place it in checked luggage the next time you fly.  I'm sure they'll get a kick out of it. We found one that's probably controversial, but surprisingly good -- Ball Buster Shiraz and I'm guessing it has nothing to do with baseball -- if it wasn't so tasty I could think of a few former bosses to send it to.

Well - ugh - the next time we go, we're driving the 21 hours to the parents' house. So I guess there are no restrictions on road travel. :\   Thanks for reminding me, though - I am going to make sure and bring a bottle!
