If I live abroad, it would likely be in Florence, Italy.

I have been to Paris and surrounding towns, Lyon, Aix, Avignon plus pretty much every town on the Frecnh Riveiera from Marseille and south and Peter Mayle (writes about Provence life alot) is one of my favorite authors.  I always thought I would live in France if I lived abroad.  That was until I went to Florence, Italy and biked for a week through the Italian tuscan countryside.  The best piece of advice that I followed was to read (or reread in my case) "The Agony and the Ecstacy" which is all about, Michaelangelo, the Medicis and Florence in the 1500's.  It talks about all those great Rennassaince artists of the time and even lists Michaelangelo's masterpiece locations in Florence and Rome (about an hour-an-one-half by train from Florence) at the very end.
