Spring and fall were miserable seasons for me until I found Flonase Nasal Spray, a prescription dose of fluticasone propionate that acts as a mild steroid to reduce nasal passage inflammation. My doctor has been prescribing Flonase for me for many years, and using it in conjunction with an oral allergy medication has made life bearable.

How - And How Well - It Works
The dosage for this product is 1-2 metered sprays (50 mcg) in each nostril up to twice per day. I use Flonase in the morning and in the evening.  When my allergies are bad, I use the product religiously twice every day, up to the maximum dosage. When my allergies aren't so bad, I might only use the product once a day, or skip a day.

Flonase doesn't work immediately. That is, if you've got the sniffles and you use it, you won't notice them going away instantly. It can take  up to twelve hours for the medicine to fully reduce the inflammation and your nasal allergy symptoms. However frequently you choose to take Flonase, you should take it on a regular basis to see the results.

For me, when it kicks in, my nasal allergy symptoms completely disappear. I will go from sneezing twenty or thirty times a day (with just the oral allergy medication) to sneezing maybe once every couple of days. My sniffles disappear and I can breathe through my nose again. It's wonderful.

Actually taking the medication isn't unpleasant. There is no strange aftertaste from the medicine dripping into your sinuses (which I've experienced with other nasal sprays). There is a bit of a scent to the medicine. To me, it smells like a garden center, very earthy. It's not unpleasant at all.

Warnings and Side Effects
As a nasal steroid, there are some potential side effects to using this product long term. Regular side effects listed for the product include nosebleeds and sore throat. I've never had either side effect. My allergist makes sure to check my nasal passages once a year to ensure that they remain healthy while using Flonase. His advice is to point the sprayer toward the outer part of my nose, not toward the septum, when spraying. He says it keeps the nasal passages healthier.

Cat's Bottom Line
If you suffer from severe allergies, and particularly nasal allergies, Flonase is far more effective than any over the counter nasal sprays I've found. It's easy to use, easy to lower your own dosage and still maintain effectiveness, and it's relatively inexpensive for a prescription medication. I highly recommend this medicine to anyone seeking relief from springtime sneezing.

You know Cyndi, I horde mine in the winter months when I don't use it much at all. The doc writes my script for year round, and I always refill it and tuck them away. I think I have about 9 boxes under my cabinet! :-P
