Plot
Meet Irwin Fletcher. He's an investigative reporter who starts the movie on a beach, while he narrates why he is there. We learn he is trying to break a big story on drug trafficking. He's befriended the locals in an effort to blend in and find out the source of the drugs.

As Fletch scopes out the beach, someone is scoping out him. Alan has been keeping an eye on him, and approaches him with a proposition. He takes him to his huge house to explain that he wants Fletcher to murder him... what?? He has bone cancer and would rather die than deal with the disease. Why murder? So his family can collect on the insurance money of course! Why Fletch? Well he's just a drifter - no one will notice if he disappears after he murders Alan. He has it all planned out, very detailed.

Back at the paper, Fletch's boss isn't happy with him for not having the drug story completed yet. Fletch promises to get it done, however we know he is more interested in researching Alan than he is in going back to the beach. So that is what the movie is all about. Fletch is trying to break his drug story AND figure out what's going on with Alan. Want to know what happens? Watch and see!!!

About Fletch
Even knowing the plot of the movie, you might not get it until you hear about Fletch. Fletch has the ability to make up a fake personality - background included - on the drop of the hat. He speaks so easily about his fake lives that no one around him has a clue he is lying. He will do what it takes and become whoever he needs to in order to get the story. He's a junkie, a doctor, a tennis pro --- and he easily merges into these characters. As a reporter he has learned to overhear names, phrases and actions of others. This helps him blend in to the scenery no matter where he is at!

Actors
Of course this movie would be nothing without the right actors!

Chevy Chase is the only person that could portray Fletch! His dry witty humor blends in so well with the lines that it takes you a second to realize what he said. He leaves the other characters with a confused look because they think he is serious. As viewers we know he is just being sarcastic.

Dr: Arnold Babar. Isn't there a children's book about an elephant named Babar?
Fletch: I don't know. I don't have any.
Dr: No children?
Fletch: No elephant books.
----
Lady: I'm sorry who are you again?
Fletch: I'm Frieda's boss.
Lady: Who's Frieda?
Fletch: My Secretary.

Geena Davis, with a small part, is a great side kick to Chevy. She is the sweeter version of him at the newspaper. She's still got that dry humor and quick wit, but it's more shocking coming from her because she seems so nice! She should have been in the movie more :)

Tim Matheson is Alan. He was good at this part since even I didn't know for sure if he was trust-worthy.

Visuals
Its made in the 80s, and the setting stays true to this. The technology such as the computers they use show the films age. However, it is still worth watching even in the 2000s. Chevy doesn't need a lot of computer tech to solve his mysteries. He uses good old fashion know-how and common sense!  Fletch's various outfits and characters will make you laugh all the time. At times you will be shocked when he comes out as a new character. It's fun to watch!

Genre
This screams comedy - but it's not slapstick. It's sarcastic dry humor that may go over some people's heads. The lines are the type you and your friends will start quoting all the time. Random funny things!  But there is also action and mystery. You will really become interested in the story. Where are the drugs coming from? Why does Alan want to be killed? The comedy perhaps enhances the action and the mystery.

For Who?
If you are the type of person who needs jokes spelled out... this is NOT the movie for you. Chevy's dry humor takes concentration in order to get a laugh. You might not get some of the jokes if you aren't paying close attention to him.  As for age range, send the kids to bed but the teens can probably enjoy it with you. There's nothing really bad in this movie, but younger kids may be bored.

The End
Fletch is a movie everyone should see. If you are a fan of Chevy Chase, and you still haven't seen this, than you aren't really a fan of Chevy Chase! Go rent it today. It will give you laughs, action and mystery all in one :) Enjoy!

Fletch Lives is pretty good too, but for me the original is the best. We own it on VHS :-D

I absolutely love this movie. Its funny that it came out the year I was born and I still watch it. The sequel Fletch Lives is also amazing. Good review.
