Fleischmann's Active Dry Yeast —

I purchase Fleischmann's Active Dry Yeast in 3-packs and use this product in all of my baking that requires regular rise active dry yeast.

I am really impressed that Ach Food Companies now lists this product as gluten free right on the packaging. Hoorah! My children have multiple food sensitivities, and labeling like this is a big deal to me. Imagine grocery shopping for a family of five with three kids helping and needing to read all food labels. If the label does not specify that a product is gluten-free, then I end up researching the product online or contacting the manufacturer.

This yeast works well in regular and gluten-free recipes. I have used mine recently for pizza crust and bread. I keep my yeast in the refrigerator (with the thought that it might keep longer and perhaps I can actually find it when I need it) but try to remember to take it out of the refrigerator the night before I'm going to bake because yeast does work better when it starts at room temperature.

The expiration date is listed on the packaging, and fresh yeast does rise better.

When dissolving yeast, I have found that it is best to use a warm liquid (about 100 to 110 degrees).

This type of yeast cannot be interchanged with rapid rise yeast, so it is wise to check the recipe to ensure that you have the correct product.

One envelope contains 2 1/4 teaspoons of yeast, and the packaging claims that it is all natural and has 0 calories/sodium/fat/carbs.

I also noticed on the packaging that the company is donating $250,000 to the Susan G. Komen for the Cure (for breast cancer) Foundation. That's even better.

They do have contact information and several websites listed on the packaging for recipe ideas and information on "Bakeforthecure."

The online price that I found for a 3-pack is $3.73, which seems a bit higher than what I believe I paid at Wal-Mart. Some stores sell this yeast in 4-oz. jars, and that would probably be more economical.

My Viewpoint:

I use Fleischmann's Active Dry Yeast because it works well in my recipes and is gluten-free. I know several people with breast cancer, and I think supporting a cause that is working toward a cure is great as well!

Yep! I'd like to know what you think!

I guess I ought to post a review on the generic Rid-X too, huh? We have shopped a good bit at Dollar General. Some of their items are really good bargains, and it's a lot quicker if you have one close by.

ohh, hahaha. I had to edit this. I went all backwards here and thought I was replying about generic YEAST. (*duh* alert)

I'd be more than happy to purchase a generic form of Rid-X. As it turns out, we've got a Dollar General Store just about to open that's a heck of a lot closer to me. Thanks for letting me know the generic kind does the trick!

We get ours a Dollar General--much cheaper than brand name. Seems to work fine for us.

There's a generic brand of Rid-X? Do tell! (we need to use it once a month here)

Will do, and I think the same way you do about this!

We buy the generic Rid-X instead of using the yeast like this. I'll have to picture flushing a loaf of bread now!

Oh, do please go ahead and post your own review, even if you have a lot of the same opinions that I do. If I read about a product and almost all of the reviews are saying the same basic thing, I would pay more attention to the piece of information when considering purchasing the product.

Yep, ladies, yeast is indeed an old time remedy for clearing bacteria from an old-fashioned septic system. Seems to me, though, a waste of a good loaf of bread or two. LOL

Good heavens, Katrena. I was just going to review this yeast, but you said just about every single thing I was going to say! Fantastic review! Thanks!

I guess it's sort of like Rid-X. How long did the yeast take to clear it up?

If you don't mine me asking, what does the yeast do to you? I know that must be hard because bread smells so good when it comes out of the oven.

GigiandAdonai wrote on Jan 30, 2009 at 4:12PM

Oh, I forgot a plumber once told me that whenever people have clogged pipes that they will recommend you flush a pack down the drain and it will eat away at whatever is clogging the pipe. They used it at my house when the tub and toilet backed up in my old house--it worked ;+)

GigiandAdonai wrote on Jan 30, 2009 at 4:11PM

I cringe when I see these packages. This is how they found out I was allergic to natural yeast. It does help my friend make some really good bread though; which unfortunately I cannot eat.
