If you are grilling challenged but love the idea of grilling outdoors, then FlameDisk could be your solution. FlameDisk is a charcoal alternative. It's an ethenol tray that fires fast and takes any challenge out of trying to rock a tailgate or home barbecue party when it comes to firing up.
I own a grilling and barbecue web site called Yes You Can Grill, so I check out loads of new grilling products and accessories for outdoors. A lot of the grill products do not do it for me, but FlameDisk was a hit.
FlameDisk looks kind of like an aluminum pie plate with a top and bottom. Between is the fuel which looks very much like candle wax with wicks through the holes in the top plate.
To use FlameDisk, just put it in the charcoal grill rather than charcoal. Then light one of the spots in the FlameDisk top (matches even come included).
The fire starts right up and is steady and even. If it gets a little too hot, just cap the lid on the grill as you would with charcoal. That damps the air down and lowers the flames, although FlameDisk really does not get out of control like charcoal can.
You get around 40 minutes of cooking time which is plenty for steak, burgers, hot dogs etc. You're going to slow smoke a pork shoulder. That's another thing when it comes to outdoor cooking totally. But, for traditional grilling, FlameDisk is right on the mark.
When you're done grilling or tailgating or whatever, all you have is an empty pie plate type of item which can be thrown away or, better yet, recycled. This is the cleanest grilling I've ever done I must say. I had less mess than with gas which is generally not real messy anyway.
As far as taste, it's a little smokier than gas but does not have that old fashioned charcoal taste. Most people can't tell though. Also, the food comes out moist unless you overcook it which no product can fix. A watched pot may not boil, but an unwatched grill will likely burn your food up. So, keep an eye on things as with any grill or grill accessory.
I say thumbs up to FlameDisk and recommend it for new grillers or those who have not had such great luck. It is also handy and very convenient for old time grillers who do not want to work so hard. It really could not be easier than with FlameDisk - from firing up to clean up.
