Children just love ELMO.  I am not sure why, his voice get's on my nerves. But you can be sure that just singing the ELMO song can make my children happy.  An interesting and entertaining toy from the Elmo collection is Elmo Live by Fisher Price.

Elmo Live by Fisher Price is priced at $59.99 and available on-line at Amazon, ToysRUs, Walmart and Target.  I suggest an on-line purchase as around the holidays they go flying off the shelves.

Elmo Live by Fisher Price Features:

  • Elmo talks just the his character on the popular television show, Sesame Street.
  • Elmo sings songs, tells stories and dances.
  • Elmo's little head goes be-bopping moving along.
  • Elmo's little body also moves, from his head to his toes.

How do you turn Elmo on?  It's a little too easy. A child simply "tickles" or squeezes trigger points at Elmo's foot, tummy, nose or back. Which also means if you don't turn him off, he can continue to make noises even from the toy box.

Six AA batteries are required to keep Elmo "Live." They are included in your purchase, but it takes a lot of power to keep this Elmo movin' so you may want to stock up. He is 12" tall.

My Viewpoint:  Elmo Live by Fisher Price is a highly entertaining and interactive "doll" just the right size for a toddler to be able to carry just about anywhere -- and they will!  At first I was not thrilled with the idea of Elmo Live by Fisher Price, but when a Grandma makes a purchase you really don't say anything other than, "Thank you." Of course the girls are more likely to say thank you it's PURRRFECT! (My daughter's new word when she get's exactly what she wants).  Elmo really does interact beautiful. For example he may say "Ohh that tickles" when hugged or tickled." He no only asked for things like a hug or a song, but will say Thank you, wiggle or giggle when there is an anticipated response.  His movements are a little noisy, and you can hear a mechanical sound when he moves his body.  His voice is true ELMO, just like on the show and is easily recognized.  He does have a power saving mode, if he hasn't been played with in a while he will "go to sleep" to be quickly awakened for play time with a simple touch. My younger daughter likes the reactions when she touches Elmo, but the older one is starting to realize that sometime Elmo says something "funny mamma." Also, it's best if he is on a hard surface like a table or floor. Carpets and bed cause him to easily fall over.

Overall Elmo Live by Fisher Price is highly entertaining, and highly expensive. But to one parent I know who used him to keep her son busy while in the hospital it was definitely worth the purchase. While children will adore him, a parent or caregiver may get a little tired of the noise and high pitched voice after some time.

In response to GigiandAdonai's comment from Dec 14, 2008 at 5:22PM:

You can turn it off or just wait for it to go idle. Personally sometimes I think just taking the batteries out is the best option :-)

Can you turn it off or do you have to wait 'til it goes idle for a while? It also sounds like a toy that could encourage some use of good manners. Good review--glad it's in your house and not mine ;+) ~Gigi

My 15-month old would love Elmo Live. He has a little Elmo baby. (like those beanie babies). Thanks for the gift idea for Christmas. Great Review!

I don't mind Elmo on Sesame Street but the toys are too much. Tickle Me Elmo *the original* and all the hassle my Aunt went through years ago to get one....totally wasn't worth it!! :)
Nice Review, LIsa!!

I am skipping this one and going for the Elmo personalized CD instead but great point about the entertainment value for your friend's son:)
