Every dwelling should have a smoke alarm, whether you own the home or rent.  Smoke detectors save lives.  The First Alert Smoke Alarm (virtually any model that First Alert makes) will provide a sense of security for every day.  No matter if it is a house, an apartment, or a condo, you need to have one of these.

These are not expensive units.  They're easy to install (just a couple of screws) and since most of them run on batteries, there's no extra wiring to fuss with.  A convenient test button on the outside of the unit's lid allowas you to check on your battery, and most of these units also include an intermittent beel when battery life runs low.  To silence one of these alarms, just open the cover.   Batteries (9 volt) are easy to replace.
