The First Alert Multi-Purpose Household Fire Extinguisher should be a must have in your home.

Fire extinguishers are rated A, B or C for the following classifications:

A     Wood, paper, cloth, rubber, most plastics and fabric

B     Flammable liquids such as gasoline, kereosene, oil and grease

C     Electrical appliances and equipment such as home wiring, TV's and electronics.

When choosing a home fire extinguisher it is most important to select the proper rating for the use.  You wouldn't buy a category B to keep in a bedroom, you would obviously need one with an A rating.

The Multi-Purpose Household Fire Extinguisher is for ALL household applications; ratings A, B and C.  Having this combination makes it easier when purchasing.  You know you only need to look for one that is multi-purpose.

The extinguisher come with brackets to mount it to the wall to make it easily accessible.

On the top of the extinguisher there is an easy to read gauge that tells you the extinguisher is full and ready to use.  You must test your extinguisher at least once a month.

If it fails testing or if the gauge reads in the red area, then immediately discard and purchase a new one.

Keeping this extinguisher in your home could make a huge difference in case of a fire.

In response to BobJon's comment from Dec 20, 2008 at 11:30PM:

The extinguisher I reviewed lasts approximately three years according to the manufacturer. The box does come with an expiration date, and it is printed on the extinguisher as well. When testing this particular extinguisher (keep in mind the one I have and reviewed is different from yours), however, the recommendation for testing any extinguisher is set by NFPA No. 10. The extinguisher should be tested to 360 PSI each month. The yellow arrow on the gauge is an indicator of what the PSI is. If the PSI is not up to standards, then the yellow arrow on the gauge will be in the red. If that is the case, then discard and replace. You say you have had your extinguisher more than five years...if this is a household extinguisher, I would assume your gauge is broken and would discard it immediately. With respect to the extinguishing agent...I honestly do not know how long that lasts...the factor is if the extinguisher will have enough pressure to work properly when needed. If you are unsure if your gauge is working properly, may I suggest you contact Kidde and ask them about your specific model. Hope this helps you! Have a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!

The review refers to testing the extinguisher at least once a month. How do you do that? My extinguisher (Kidde 110- ABC) says to discard after any use. We have had the unit over 5 years and the guage has remained in the green range. How long does the extinguishing agent last? Bob S.
