I know a lot of people who don't maintain their bicycles in any way. As long as the tires aren't flat they just hop on and go for a ride. While that works for a while, eventually the parts will grind to a halt. If you are resistant to working on your bike, one of the easiest things you can still do that will make a difference is lubricating the chain. How hard can it be?
Lubricating the chain will make it easier to pedal, since there will be less resistance amongst the moving parts. Also, lubricating the chain will extend the life of the chain. Otherwise, grit and dust gradually accumulate and grind away at the mechanisms. Some day the unmaintained chain will snap, and then you will be stuck.
Finish Line makes a variety of chain lubricating products that are very helpful in keeping a bicycle chain operating, and I use Finish Line Dry Teflon Lube. The so called ''dry'' lubes are best for bicycling in dry conditions, like on pavement.
Dry lubes apply as a liquid, but then form a dry film to help repel dust and dirt. Wet lubes, on the other hand, stay wet when applied, and are best for long-distance riding or rough conditions such as biking on dirt trails or in the rain.
Finish Line Dry Teflon Lube is easily applied. Just one drop of liquid on each roller of the chain is needed. Turn the wheel backward as you work, and keep applying one drop on each link. When you've done the whole chain, apply a dry rag and gently run the chain through once to remove excess.
The working mechanisms of the derailleur should also be lubricated from time to time, as well as the moving parts of the brake mechanisms. However, only one drop of liquid is needed. If the chain becomes gritty or grimy, it should be cleaned. There are chain cleaner kits available that clip onto the chain then brush off the dirt as you run the chain through it.
I highly recommend Finish Line Dry Teflon Lube as a lubricant for bicycle chains. It cost about $4 for a 2 ounce bottle, and is also sold in larger bottles for a lower price per ounce. Applying lubricant to the chain periodically will make it easier to ride the bike and also lengthen the life of the chain.
