I have only read two issues of Figure magazine but I wasn't too crazy about it.  Like others, I got my issue of Figure at Fashion Bug while shopping for clothes.  The cashier indicated that the magazine had a coupon inside so if I bought the magazine for around $3 and used the coupon inside I'd basically get the magazine for free and save about $8 off my total.  I had been wanting to check it out anyway so I agreed.

The issues I read consists mostly of plus size models wearing clothes for the season.  There were articles about choosing jewelry, how to be a good houseguest, and a lengthy article about actress Kathy Najimy but most of the content was simply fashion and not anything else that really interested me or prompted me to do much but flip thru and throw it out.

I do like that the models are plus size and the magazine's content appears to gravitate towards acceptance and happiness at any size/weight.  However several of the advertisements in this magazine (and there were plenty of them) were for Weight Watchers and other diet foods which seems to me to be a mixed message.  On one hand the magazine celebrates beauty and fashion at every size but the other hand is indicating that we cannot possibly be happy to be plus size and that we must be on Weight Watchers.  I don't like that contradiction but the bottom line is that the content is not meaty or interesting enough to tempt me to buy it again or to subscribe.

In the late 90s there was a magazine called Mode which was for regular and plus size women and it was awesome.  They unfortunately stopped writing it in 2001 and I was hoping Figure would be similar but it falls far short and does not have the same really good content.

2 stars - I found Figure magazine to pretty much be a waste of time.  It does contain multiple coupons for Fashion Bug, Lane Bryant, and Catherine's though so it was not a complete waste of money.

I remember Mode magazine! I still have the first issue. Thanks for the info on Figure magazine. I think I'll pass on it.

I totally agree. Figure is such a boring, dull magazine. It makes me feel lame and fat so I never even ask for it anymore. I'd prefer something that got me feeling excited and "plus-sized." Who wants to feel frumpy from a magazine???

I remember Mode! I don't know why on earth people of different weights have to have different magazines. We're all people. Show an ad for a slim person and then one for a plus sized, and one for a normal person cuz let's face it, the models in the fashion magazines aren't normal sized. I want to start my own fashion and beauty magazine for the everyday woman. Have wanted to for years.

Good thing you didn't sign up for a full subscription and then find out you didn't enjoy it. :)
