Field of Dreams 1989 Review

You would not be wrong in calling this film too sentimental, a bit too syrupy and with a ridiculous far-fetched story.

You'd be in a tiny minority if after watching the film you were not touched by its magic and thoroughly entertained.

It's a mythic baseball fantasy basedonW.P. Kinsella's novel, Shoeless Joe that stars  Kevin Costner as an Iowa corn farmer that hears a voice telling him that...'if you build it, they will come.'

So though his wife (Amy Madigan) tries to support him, she's very nervous when he begins to make a baseball diamond out of one of his corn fields.     Will the baseball diamond attract Shoeless Joe Jackson and others who were disgraced and thrown out of baseball in the notorious 1919 Black Sox scandal?

James Earl Jones is absolutely superb playing a reclusive writer character based on J.D. Salinger.

The cast includes  Burt Lancaster, Ray Liotta, Timothy Busfield and others.  

It was written and directed by Phil Alden Robinson.
