The Well of Lost Plots is the third book in Jasper Fforde's Thursday Next series, and when we rejoin her here, she's considered something of an oddity - an Outlander. It takes a little persuading to convince some of the characters in Caversham Heights (the unpublished novel where she's in hiding) that she is a real person...One asks "What's the point of alphabet soup?" and when she admits that she doesn't know, he becomes suspicious, demanding to know why there is no singular for scampi.
