Ferrets are Fun, But....

My daughter who is six years old was given a ferret this past summer. She was very excited to get him. He had been fixed and descented (so they said!!).

He took right to her and the rest of the family. He was very energetic when he was awake. Ferrets like to sleep about  eighteen hours a day, but the first week or so I am sorry to say Vinnie just didn't get anywhere near that much. He spent alot of time running around our house jumping out at us from behind the furniture and dragging socks and other items into the dryer and behind the couch.

He was really funny to play with, he had such a great personality ( yes! he definitely had a personality all his own!). As time went on my daughter slowly got interested in other things espicially when school started. It was alot of work to actually keep his cage CLEAN, though he didn't seem to mind when it wasn't.

He now lives with my mom and gets much more attention on a daily basis than he would have with us.

All in all I would only suggest this pet for someone who is willing to put a little extra effort into having a pet. Myself, I prefer cats, all I really have to do for them is feed and water them. They are outside so I don't even have a litter box to clean!

Being Vinnie's new caretaker, I have to agree with Michelle that he is full of personality! Keeping him in a three level ferret condo in my living room requires frequent cage cleanings, but I feel it's worth it for the amusement he provides!
He loves to have his little harness put on him, and be allowed to run around with a lightweight leash attached, to make certain that he doesn't get lost! Chasing my dogs seems to bring him a great deal of delight!
I think ferrets are great pets for responsible teens, or younger kids with parents who can help out. They also make good companions for adults of any age who live alone. Because they sleep so much, they are always up for play when you are! They become quite tame, and although not quite as loving as a dog, they do show affection!
