Ferret —

I have owned ferrets for about 12 years now.  I think they are great pets if taken care of and trained well.  In 12 years I have had 4 different ferrets and they have all been great companions and great with children.  I never had any children living in my home, but when we had family over the ferrets were always a big curiosity for the all of the kids.  Mine never bit anyone or even acted mean.  They tolerated being picked up and constant attention from the children.

Before getting a ferret you should do your research on what it takes to care for one.  It's not difficult to learn, they just aren't as easy to take care of as a cat or dog.  They need more individual attention.  I just put my last one (#4) to sleep this morning.  He was old and wasn't doing well.  The lifespan of ferrets is only around 5-7 years.  They are such small animals that if they get sick it really takes a lot out of them.  My last 2 ferrets were put to sleep due to old age and not being well.  I never really had to deal with any major sicknesses or diseases.

My last 2 ferrets were adopted from shelters.  Which I think is a great idea if you're looking to adopt a ferret.  Of course you have to check out the shelter itself to make sure the animals are safe and the shelter is reputable.  You can get really young ferrets from a shelter, just like you can in a pet store.  The only difference, in my opinion is that the shelter ferrets may be healthier and happier.  Most shelters make sure the animals are well socialized, most of the time with other types of pets (cats, dogs) and children and well taken care of medically.  I haven't been to a shelter that I felt was not safe or reputable.

The only thing I would caution people on is the maintenance of these animals.  They need to be played with and let out of their cage (if you use one) everyday.  This is even more important when they're younger.  They need to be able to get their energy out.  Also, you have to research veterinarians.  Not all vets treat ferrets, so you can't assume you can use the same one for all of your different animals.  You also have to buy certain litter and food for ferrets.  Because their respiratory systems are so small you have to be careful not to use litter that has a lot of dust.  Learning to trim their nails is also a must, but it's really easy once you both get the hang of it.

For the most part I think ferrets are great for anyone, whether they have small children or other pets.  They are especially good for people who can't get outside or are looking for a small pet.  They don't last as long as other pets, and may not be as cuddly as other pets can be, but they are still great companions who will love you unconditionally!
