ferrets are a high maintenance pet that is the third most popular pet in the world.  the key to understanding ferrets is EDUCATION.  anyone interested in ferrets should buy a book and read it before adopting a ferret from a shelter or purchasing one from a pet store.  i would also see if there is a ferret shelter close by and volunteer there.  i recommend adopting from a shelter because the shelter knows each ferrets personality:  biter, nippy, blind, deaf, likes kids, gets along with other animals etc.  there are genetic problems with different colorings of ferrets, and a shelter would be able to recognize these.  there are many health problems that a ferret can have, some inexpensive to treat, others expensive.  i highly recommend adopting from a shelter since the ferret would be litter box trained already, and any "bad" habits usually have been broken, or at least minimized.
