Boxes are important for moving and for general household storage. In the past, most people paid a visit to a grocery store or department store when they needed boxes and politely asked if there were some extras available free of charge. Stores usually obliged, both to satisfy customers and to eliminate what was, for them, an item of waste. Today, some people still hunt for boxes the old- fashioned way, but now there is a better way to obtain boxes: Buy them in a package, ready to use. One such moving and storage box I have used and liked is the Fellowes 0062801 Medium Smooth Move Moving Box, a cube- shaped box that folds into shape.

Box Commentary:

Fellowes 0062801 Medium Smooth Move Moving Boxes are shaped almost like a perfect cube, measuring 18 inches in height, 18 inches in width, and 16 inches in depth. Purchased in a package that includes eight boxes, these storage devices are purchased flat and are assembled by folding and locking the sides into place. The boxes are designed to hold items of medium weight or lighter and they can be transported easily using the built- in handles. Once used, the boxes can be unfolded and stored flat.

To help consumers assemble the Fellowes 0062801 Medium Smooth Move Moving Box correctly, each of the flaps on the top and bottom of the box is numbered. This is a great idea because it takes some of the frustration out of the process. People who move frequently or use boxes like these on a consistent basis don’t need any assistance. But for someone who moves only on rare occasion, the numbering helps because it eliminates any guesswork from the process. The bottom of the box includes a quick set of diagrams that explain how the top and bottom are folded, but the numbered flaps are still useful because they reduce frustration.

Fellowes 0062801 Medium Smooth Move Moving Boxes are pretty strong and durable. Two of the four sides of this box, as well as the bottom, include a double layer of box material. Not only does this help to strengthen the box so that it can handle heavy loads, it also makes the box sturdier so that it's less likely to bend itself out of shape. With cheaper boxes, an overstuffed box will cause the sides to bulge, making it more likely to spill its contents after lifting.

Looking for some cons, I can find only a few minor faults with Fellowes 0062801 Medium Smooth Move Moving Boxes. One thing that some will not like is the fact that the lid includes two small flaps that are tucked into the handles, where you then stick your hands to life the box. This works well enough, but the problem is that these flaps are likely to pop out when the box is closed. Sure, you can reach down and tuck them back in before you lift, but this will annoy some consumers. The reason they pop out so easily is because there is no way to lock them in place, in sharp contrast to the other parts of the box, all of which lock into place.  Another problem is with weight. If you try to pack something too heavy, there is a good chance you will not be able to lift using the built in handles without causing strain on the hands. This could force you to pick up and lift by the bottom, and that would defeat the whole purpose of having handles.

Bottom Line Viewpoint:

Moving is an incredible annoyance but Fellowes 0062801 Medium Smooth Move Moving Boxes help to relieve some of the stress and strain. These boxes can be used for other purposes as well, such as general storage, making them a good multi- purpose box for all of your storage and packing needs. A little more attention to the design of the handle flaps would have been nice, but this is still a very good general purpose box with enough positive qualities to earn a recommendation.

I bought a new home almost 6 years ago and had to collect boxes. I wasn't going to purchase them only to throw them away. K-Mart gave me some really great boxes that they use in their layaway. These boxes sound good if you can afford to purchase and/or if you will be storing stuff.
